山本周五郎は「文学には“純”も“不純”もなく、“大衆”も“少数”もない。ただ“よい小説”と“わるい小説”があるばかりだ」を信念とし、普遍妥当性をもつ人間像の造形を生涯の目的とした作家で、時代小説を中心に沢山の作品を残しています。 その作風は今なお古臭さを感じさせず、繊細に描かれた人の心の機微や人情に、思わず笑わされたり、胸を打たれたりする魅力に溢れています。
＜あらすじ＞
平松正四郎は中老の筆頭である田原権右衛門に呼びだされた。
田原が切り出した話は、もしや江戸の方に縁の切れていない女などがいはしないか、というものであった。正四郎と加島家との縁談が始まった時にも確かめられた内容である。
正四郎は一瞬の逡巡の後にいないと答えるが、田原は、「では訊くが、いまおまえの家にいる娘は、どういう関係の者だ」と問うた。
なんでも正四郎の家に一人の見知らぬ娘がいるのを、鹿島家の娘・ともえが見たのだという。田原は、「加島家から厳重な抗議が来ている。もしそれがお前とくされ縁のある女なら、縁談はとりやめになるからそう思え」と断じる。
正四郎は全く覚えがないながらも気になって仕方が無く、勘定仕切を終えるとすぐに家に帰った。
家には見覚えのない女が確かにいた。だが娘は「正四郎に会う」ということ以外は、何も記憶していないのだという。自分の家がどこにあるかも、自分の名さえもわからないばかりか、正四郎に会う目的さえわかっていないというのであった。
正四郎は真意を確かめるために、娘と話すことにするのだが……
＜山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）＞
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。©2018 PanRolling
