About this listen

From the creator of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Vale podcast comes a story about loving, about searching – and about the courage you need when you find the unexpected.

Keisha Lewis mourned the loss of her wife, Alice, who disappeared two years ago. There was a search, there was grief beyond what she thought was possible. There was a funeral.

But then Keisha began to see her wife, again and again, in the background of news reports from all over America.

Alice isn’t dead. And she is showing up at the scene of every tragedy in the country.

Keisha shrugs off her old life and hits the road as a trucker – hoping on some level that travelling the length of the country will lead her to the person she loves.

What she finds are buried crimes and monsters (both human and unimaginable), government conspiracies, haunted service stations and a darkness far older than the highway system it lies beneath.

Cast in the fluorescent lights of midnight diner-signs, this story is as big as the open road and as intimate as the darkness of a trucker’s cab: perfect for fans of Stephen King, Serial, Twin Peaks and American Gods.

Brilliant

Completely brilliant story, twists and turns with a wonderful sombre ending. Teaching forgiveness and that being yourself and being scared is perfectly okay.

A Wonderful Atmospheric Book

I love this book wholeheartedly. The shape of the story wraps around you in a way that makes it feel familiar. The characters are relatable and the strangeness of the story feels like its going to seep into the reap world. Stunningly well written. The performance by Jasika Nicole was fantastic, full of feeling and drew me in.

Listen to the podcast.

Honestly this was slightly disappointing, whilst it was nostalgic to hear Alice and Keisha’s story again, what we have here is a watered down version of the original. What was subtle is now painful opaque, what was ambiguous is now explicit, all the little episodic adventures are gone.

Alice and Keisha are much more rounded and developed but I prefer the epistolary nature of the original, it felt more real, whereas Fink’s omniscient narration feels like he’s explaining the story to you.

It's good

Left it with a 4/5 overall because some of my favourite parts from the podcast didn't make it into the final cut of the book. Both are still very good and well worth the listen, but I miss the road trip bits missing here.

Brilliant horror/action

As someone who suffers from anxiety I loved the depiction of itym and the fact it wasn't something to be "overcome". The "monsters" were terrifying in a human way which kept me listening right to the end. Now I need to go and pick up the Nightvale podcast I discarded many years ago! I missed it.
