Summary

In today's world of supplements, celebrity diets and social media, it's very easy to be hard on ourselves about the way we look. With all this pressure to strive for 'perfection' aesthetically, it is easy to forget how damaging this can be psychologically.

Michelle Elman is a leading part of the body positivity movement that has been gathering momentum to liberate people from these unrealistic standards, recognise that all bodies are equally valuable and broaden the billboard definitions of beauty. Am I Ugly? is this inspiring woman's compelling and deeply personal memoir that describes her childhood experiences of life-threatening health problems, long stays in hospital and 15 complex surgeries that left her scarred, both mentally and physically.

The narrative follows Michelle's journey from illness to health and from childhood to adulthood as she deals with her body-confidence issues to embrace both her scars and her body - and help others to do the same. This remarkable audiobook grapples with the wider implications of Michelle's experiences and the complex interplay between beauty and illness.

Fantastic enthralling story

I knew I’d like this book but I was surprised at how much I loved it considering how serious and personal aspects of the author’s life that we’re shared. Elman is surprisingly lighthearted and her writing is fluid, witty and enjoyable to read. There are an astonishing amount of events that happen to her in her early life however you end up finishing the book not only wanting more but and also feeling like you’ve gained a lovely friend, because it’s as if she is telling you her story as her friend. This also makes this book very easy and quick to read.

Elman writes intelligently about her early life in and out of surgeries. Despite the amount of medical and technical content the heartwarming stories about her relationships with her friends and her positive perspective on everything that happens is admirable.
At no point does it feel needy or narcissistic it’s a lovely story about a young girl growing up around many obstacles that the majority of us will never have to face.

She touches upon many themes of this book that will open the eyes of readers that have not experienced these scenarios like PTSD major surgery recovery body shaming and body confidence. I’d like to thank the author for opening up about her very personal elements of her life in order to share experiences with the rest of the world

The audiobook is spectacular and the narrator has really kept true to The author‘s way of speaking - her intonation in particular is similar and lovely to listen to.

Such an eye opener

I absolutely loved this book. I've had a lot of abdominal surgery due to Ulcerative Colitis & this book made me feel like I'm not alone. It made me laugh and cry. I loved the body positive message that Michelle got across so well. I'd recommend this book to anyone that has struggled with accepting their bodies/life struggles.

Wonderful storytelling for a wonderful story

This book is a unique story but made me feel so seen. Most books like this I have read always put the events of the story before the storytelling, this book has the balance right. It is funny but it is truthful, insightful yet not preaching. It makes you ask yourself what little changes can I make to change my life.
