「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の短編。初出は「文學界」［1939（昭和14）年］。5月1日の起床から就寝までの少女の一日を描いた話で、少女の心理の移り行く様を丹念に写し取っている。当時、文芸時評を担当していた川端康成は、「「女生徒」のやうな作品に出会へることは、時評家の偶然の幸福なのである」と賛辞を送った。
