多治見城主の国家老・知次茂平はいつも「近ごろの若い者は肚が据わらない」と嘆く活気ある老人。茂平は友の存右衛門が亡くなるとき、息子の孝之助の後見を託された。孝之助は学問も武芸も中くらいだが、たいへんな美男が際立つゆえに無能に見えてしまうという男。家中の評判も思わしくなく、本人も意気地がない。あるときから孝之助は、城で起こるいくつもの騒ぎの犯人に「わたくしです」と名のり出る。過失をした人の身代わりをするようになった孝之助の心の内が明らかになる。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
