Summary

In a time of compromise and disillusionment, God is calling his people to a movement of beautiful resistance.

We live in a time when our culture is becoming increasingly shallow, coarse, and empty. Radical shifts in the areas of sexuality, ethics, technology, secular ideologies, and religion have caused the once-familiar landscape of a generation ago to be virtually unrecognizable.

Yet rather than shine as a beacon of light, the church often is silent or accommodating. This isn’t a new phenomenon. During World War II, pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was deeply troubled by the compromise in the German church. Their capitulation to the Nazi party brought shame and dishonor to the gospel. In response, he helped create an underground movement of churches that trained disciples and ultimately sought to renew the church and culture of the day.

In our compromised church, we need new underground movements of discipleship and resistance. Widely respected New York Pastor Jon Tyson unveils a revived vision for faithful discipleship - one that dares to renew culture, restore credibility, and replace compromise with conviction.

For all who have felt this conflict in the soul between who we are and who God calls us to be, Beautiful Resistance is a bold invitation to reclaim what’s been lost - regardless of the cost.

Praise for Beautiful Resistance:

Beautiful Resistance is one of the most compelling and defiant books I’ve read in a long time. I love Jon’s radical, no-messing vision of the church as a prophetic community. This is a wake-up call for us all from the heart of a man who lives his message, loves his city, and serves his Lord with a passion and intelligence destined to become less rare.” (Pete Greig, founder of the 24-7 Prayer movement)

Great book

First chapter was hard going, the rest is challenge after challenge. I don’t generally do books twice but may have to to remind me to take action on so many areas.

Need different reader

Seriously, get this book in paper don’t listen to it on audible. I genuinely drifted off several times. Which is almost impossible when listening to Jon Tyson. Please guys get this re-recorded! It’s too important to message and to go to book to leave a listener underwhelmed.

Insightful and inspiring

An incredibly well-written, insightful, thought-provoking book. Jon Tyson has taught me a lot about the traditions and history of the Christian faith, as well as provided me practical applications for how to better live and make disciples in the world today. The book is littered with stories of the lives of saints, whose testimonies serve to inspire and ignite a passion to seek Christ and share the gospel.
Beautifully read by Sean Pratt and Jon Tyson. Highly recommend this book.

Required reading for Christians

There are a myriad of Christian books published each year, many of excellent quality, skilfully critiquing the world and its problems, but few like this- forcing us to look within and deal with the problems WE cause as Christians.

Each chapter is focuses on a single social norm - apathy, fear or idolatry, and advocates for the counter-cultural CHRISTIAN response. I was challenged about fasting in ‘Hunger Must Resist Apathy’ and true generous life-sharing in ‘Hospitality Must Resist Fear’. Tyson explores topics such as intersectionality, privilege and identity politics through a biblical lens, without rancour. He challenges us, using the life of Bonhoeffer as a thread, to live our lives with conviction.

Tyson is an Australian, living in NYC. While it is obvious that he loves the city, and his adopted homeland, mercifully, the themes he addresses are universal. Christians throughout the world can read this and be blessed. This is another refreshing change.

While this is an easy read, it is still hard to swallow (in a good way). This book has exposed areas in my life where I am not living the true Christian walk, and that is important. I have been educated on the prevailing wisdom and found it lacking. It is a work of edification but never condescending.

Excellent

Tyson beautifully weaves the story of Bonhoeffer with threads from Richard Foster and his own experience working in NYC. A call to resist the cultural environment in specific ways - particularly loved the call from cynicism to celebration.
