Summary

If you love B A Paris' Behind Closed Doors and Linda Green's While My Eyes Were Closed, you will love Before I let You In, the brand-new novel from Jenny Blackhurst, the number one best-selling Kindle author of How I Lost You, which Clare Mackintosh called 'utterly gripping'.

If you don't know who is walking through the door, how do you know if you should let them in?

Karen is meant to be the one who fixes problems. It's her job as a psychiatrist - and it's always been her role as a friend. But Jessica is different. She should be the patient, the one Karen helps. But she knows things about Karen. Her friends, her personal life. Things no patient should know. And Karen is starting to wonder if she should have let her in.

reasonable story, ropey narration

The story is okay but it's really let down by the wooden narration. There is no change in tone between characters so you struggle to realise who's speaking. also her voice has an irritating smugness to it.

Enjoyable!

Any additional comments?

This is a good modern crime fiction book. It could be better with a little more attention paid to researching differences between Psychologists and Psychiatrists. The story itself is good, but it drags a little in places. The ending is excellent until the very last sentence which (not to give anything away) is not what would have been said there. I suspect though, that the bits that bother me, may only distract Psychologists and Psychiatrists! The narration is excellent in respect of voicing different characters, emphasis etc. One sentence is read twice and not edited. The most noteable issue though is the very long pauses between chapters. Twice early on in my listening, I went to check if the app had crashed due to the length of the pause. After that, it didn't improve, I just expected it.

Poor

Firstly the narrator probably ruined this book for me . Dragging out the words and over dramatising the 3 women's characters. "B" was the worst . Also the ridiculously irritating abbreviations on peoples names . The story was slow and there are parts in it which just go on and on.

Enjoyable

This book was a good read only spoilt by the long pauses the narrator made between chapters. 5 star for the story.

Twist in the tale

A bit slow to start with but it livened up tremendously. Couldn't quite work out how it was going to end up. One of the more intriguing audio books I've listened to. Well thought out plot line. Congratulations to the author. Well worth listening to.

I listened to the end

What did you like most about Before I Let You In?

I kept listening to the end even though it was not my really my type of book. Anticipated what was the "twist".

Would you be willing to try another book from Jenny Blackhurst? Why or why not?

No

What aspect of Jennifer Ness’s performance might you have changed?

She sounded a bit like Dawn French at times.

Clever plot

Good story which moved with pace.

However, the massive over-use of emphasis was so distracting, indeed annoying. Almost every other word, often totally changing the meaning of the sentence from how I would have read it. And it never stopped - until the epilogue which was flattened: at last!!

The prose was good but as it was so oddly read, I skim-listened just to end the torture.

Will avoid this narrator but the story-teller is worth enjoying - I may actually read the next one!

Twists Galore

Plenty of intriguing twists involving some very interesting characters. Also nicely read like nearly all the Audible books.

I read to the end....

Sadly I found this book frustrating, I kept waiting for it to get better but it didn't. The twist at the end was very predictable.

a little hard to follow

Well narrated but a bit difficult to follow. I may have been spoiled by recent audio books however.
