Terrible narrator. Endless horrendous pauses
I did not like this book at all. I stuck with it because I love all of Cummings other books, therefore was expecting some pathos or self deprecating hubris.
Basically I did not care about south of France holiday and given that the majority of the book was there, it failed
For me.
The narrator was just awful when reading the main character. Dreadful. I wish I’d believed the other bad reviews because they were right!!!! Avoid listening to this at all costs.

Jaw-droppingly bad
Fatuously narrated and appallingly badly written. Full of cliche and thinly written characters. If you want a contemporary spy novel, the Slough House series is in a totally different league.

Narrator lets this down...
I’m a Charles Cummings fan and I think this was shaping up to be good yarn, but I’m afraid I gave up after three chapters. Reading a story is a highly skilled job and I think the author deserved a better narrator on this one. The delivery is as if it’s aimed at nine year olds. Audiobooks are expensive (if you think about it) and we deserve good quality narrators.

Elegant novel
Ignore the poor reviews, this is a rather elegant novel with a multi layered, clever and intruiging plot. The start is slow but worth the wait. I have absolutely no problem with the narration, in fact I would say it is just right for the the story. I think the naysayers just didn't get it. Listen to it, it is good.

Cummings goes from strength to strength.
This novel was a pleasure to read and would make for a great TV serialisation, if the rights have not already been sold. The third book I have read from the author and with each new title his craft improves. The story is a coming of age tale of a Scottish teen introduced to the world of international spying by a respected teacher from his private school. the story bounces from the past to the future smoothly and keeps context so as to not be annoying. Very enjoyable read.

The only negative.of listening to Box 88 is the knowledge that it will sometime have to come to an end . Many thanks to Charles Cummins for stepping up yet again and delivering an absolute blinder.
