Unbelievably bad accents from the narrator.

Firstly I'll say I love the Infernal Devices (and all the Shadowhunter stories) and have read them as Kindle books. This time I thought I'd try the audio. The only reason I haven't returned this one is that I've checked ahead and the next two books have different narrators.
According to Wikipedia this narrator, while born in the US, has a British mother, but I can hardly believe it. Her British accents are truly terrible. Henry is made so plummy sounding as to be a complete parody of a Victoria gentleman, and don't even get me started on Mortmain. I'm assuming she's attempting some kind of Yorkshire accent, although it veers from vague Yorkshire to sometime Scottish to just plain odd. Honestly, for a book where the majority of the characters are English, more effort could have been made to find a suitable narrator. While I recommend this story, I do not recommend this recording.

Terrible narration!

The book is great and the story well worth reading if you like the Shadowhunters series. The narration, however, is abysmal. The fake English accent is grating, she gave Gabriel Lightwood a lisp he does not have in the book and screeches horribly when trying to convey urgency, making some of the female characters sound demented...
Very disappointing!

One of my favourite books 📚

I absolutely love the shadow world and all the characters in it. This is one of my favourite young adult reads and The Infernal Devices is the best series of them all so to have this on audio is fantastic. Tessa, Will and Jem are amazing characters and I couldn't put this book down, I've read it many times and now I can listen to it too. l think Jennifer does a great job at reading this, the voices she uses for each character is clear and recognised, with no irritation. I highly recommend!

Narration isn't as bad as the mortal instruments

At least this woman doesn't sound like she's trying to be posh!

Is she good at accents? No but she isn't irritating either.

The story as always is awesome.

Good book

The story was good as it takes you back in time to shadow hunters of the past. But I was disappointed with the person reading the book as a lot of the voices sometimes sounded the same which made it a bit distracting

Great story - dreadful narrator- disappointing

For shadowhunter fans this pre-story clips along but the reader is dismal : all the voices are minimally different to each other and the pace drags. Reading it yourself would be worth the extra effort. A great shame and redoing the audio books for this whole set with a single good narrator would be worth the investment.

Overall it was not as good as when I first read the mortal instruments.

It was my attempt to get back into the shadow hunter universe and seemed a little intense to begin with but could easily catch up after the first few chapters. Acts as a brief refresher touching on needed points before carrying on its own story. Wouldn’t suggest reading this as an entry to the universe at all. The peril also felt like it came in abit late but was more to set up the sequel. Overall it was not as good as when I first read the mortal instruments.

cannot convey the concept of shouting

Narrator is actually excellent, accents are brilliant and convey different characters with an incredible amount of detail and nuance. But unfortunately this narrator's interpretation of "shouting" is so, so so so incredibly, truly and intensely awful that it utterly,, completely, entirely ruins everything. And I do mean everything. I find myself completely unable to enjoy the book at all, whatsoever. The "shouting" is so weird and bizarre that it completely ruins any ability to enjoy the book at all. I find myself wanting to turn it off completely any time there is any dramatic situation. And with the nature of the book these occur quite a lot. My suggestion would be to read it yourself. The book is entertaining. The narration is really very good but punctuated but such truly awful moments that it completely ruins it.

I've changed my mind. The narration is all awful. I thought the interpretation of the different characters' voices quite good at first. but the more I listen the more and more unbearable her weird voices get. It's completely ruining the story. You can't get into it at any point because the plot is constantly interrupted by these truly bizarre, sing song voices that completely pull you out of the moment.

Worst audio book narration I've ever heard by an absolute mile. I will be avoiding any books read by this narrator in future.

By the angel

Heavens above I find myself dragged down into the wonderful mind of Ms Clare
As she spins a web off kidnapping and rescue from one dark corner to another with my head spinning in the shadows as our heroes and villains come to light in the darkness.
