Fantastic book

Great finale to one of my favourite books. The only thing bugging me is the mispronunciation of Aloysius Starkweather’s name. As spoken in Clockwork Prince (Book 2), the name is pronounced Alo-wish-us. Other than that, 5* book.

wondefully heartbreaking

Absolutely loved it. The characters are so well developed you feel everything they feel and live the ups and downs with them. The wonderfully heartbreaking telling of this final book had me enthralled and taking my tablet everywhere with me so I could keep listening

the best reading of any of the shadowhunter books

I already loved these books and have been frustrated by the reading of previous infernal devices books and the mortal instruments series. this narrator however does a great job.

Love this author

only strange thing with this audio book is that Will ends up with a Welsh accent that he didn't have for the previous audio books

Excellent book and reading!

One of Cassandra Clare's best books, read wonderfully, with all the accents accurately performed.

The most incredible love story

I have re-read this 3 book series more times than I can count, and have finally listened to the audio books. They had me in floods of tears, as always. Thank you for allowing me to experience this story in a different way.

Fantastic narrator, shame he didn’t read the first two. This trilogy, hmm, make up your own minds!

I read the Infernal Devices straight after The Mortal Instruments: Part 1 (as the author recommends) and I’m still not sure how I feel about this book and the other two Infernal Devices novels.

The Shadowhunter world remains engaging and the arch-villain storyline isn’t bad, but there’s very little action - everything is about the love triangle between Jem, Will and Tessa. The entire story could easily have been told in one book by leaving out the many hours of teenage obsessive emoting. At times it was so gushing it was like listening to a pulpy Mills and Boon romance, rather than a series about a secret magic world with demon hunting warriors. I was actually embarrassed to be heard listening to some of it and had to turn the volume right down - my partner even asked if she’d started writing her own fanfic! Having said that, I appreciate that first books in the series also had a fair amount of relationship drama and it’s a popular theme, but personally, I didn’t find the Clary and Jace novels nearly as irritating as there was always plenty of action taking place.

This, and the other books, are well written and the frequent literature quotations are beautiful. This particular narrator is superb - if the narrator of the Clockwork Angel book had been reading this I think I might have given up, but then I’m British not from the USA. I loved the fact that the Welsh parts were read so fluently and with a genuine Welsh accent.

Despite the overabundance of hand-wringing and emotional outpouring, I still enjoyed the books and even cried at some of the descriptive passages where characters were potentially dying (no spoilers here!). I wanted to keep listening so I knew how the story developed and ended. In that sense, the books are all a great success but they would have been a lot better with far less relationship drama and many more events - for example, we’re constantly told through the three novels how powerful Tessa is but she rarely uses her shapeshifting ability and we never find out if she has any other abilities. What a lost opportunity!

I may be wrong but I believe there are also several inconsistencies not picked up during the editing. The one that struck me most was near the end of this book, where Tessa remembers that Will fell in love with her at their very first meeting in Mrs Dark’s house (during the Clockwork Angel novel). Odd, as we were specifically told by Will that it was later, when he read Tessa’s letters to her brother, that he fell in love with her…

I’ll carry on with the remaining Shadowhunter novels as the world is interesting and the writing style is very good. I just hope the books aren’t massively padded out with romantic guff as these have been.
