Summary
Read by the author, Michelle Zauner, lead vocalist of Japanese Breakfast.
One of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of the Year
Goodreads Choice Awards Winner: Memoir & Autobiography
The New York Times bestseller from the Grammy-nominated indie rockstar Japanese Breakfast, an unflinching, deeply moving memoir about growing up mixed-race, Korean food, losing her Korean mother, and forging her own identity in the wake of her loss.
'As good as everyone says it is and, yes, it will have you in tears. Essential for anybody who has lost a loved one, as well as those who haven't' – Marie–Claire
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humour and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.
As she grew up, moving to the east coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, performing gigs with her fledgling band – and meeting the man who would become her husband – her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live.
It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.
Vivacious, lyrical and honest, Michelle Zauner’s voice is as radiantly alive in her audiobook as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.
‘Wonderful... The writing about Korean food is gorgeous... but as a brilliant kimchi-related metaphor shows, Zauner’s deepest concern is the ferment, and delicacy, of complicated lives.’ - Victoria Segal, Sunday Times

Beautiful
What’s a gorgeous book.
It’s deep and light at the same time.
The profound relationship between food, culture, and familial bonds is so perfectly articulated. I want to eat Korean food forever and I plan to cherish my mum a whole lot harder while I can.
Thank you for this gift and for sharing your story. See you at one if your gigs very soon!
Thank you to my new person for sharing this with me, if they’re reading. ❤️🔥

Absolutely phenomenal
This was absolutely phenomenal. For anyone who loves to learn about someone’s authentic life experience and it’s intricate beauty, and can appreciate the nuances of life and culture, this book is for you. I read it to better understand a loved one’s experience of parental loss, which I did, and I was surprised to additionally gain in-depth insight into life as an American with a mixed heritage. It’s also a book for you adore food.

crying in my sick bed
I read this book as part of a book club. I didn't know from the title just how much it would grip my heart. I am an immigrant across the ocean from my family, I am also terminally ill. it's hard to come to terms with freshly 30 and dying fast from home and so many emotions I feel were perfectly encapsulated in this book. I cannot express how thankful I am to have been able to read it.

Great but difficult read
Good story and insight into Korean culture. But a difficult read for anyone who has lost their family or not seen them due to the pandemic. I struggled with this one a bit.

Heart warming and sad
such a beautiful memoir, I just lost my mother 6 months ago so it was a hard read but it also reminded me that things will slowly start to fit in place.

touching in places I would never expect
Mesmerising story that I could finish in one sitting. It perfectly demonstrated how food and family are in the centre of korean culture. Beautiful memoir of Michelle's mother.

Such an amazing autobiography!
I really liked the strong theme of Grief and Motherhood, identity and Korean culture. The Narrator was brilliant at storytelling.
