Summary

A self-published phenomenon examining the habits that kept our ancestors disease-free - now with a prescriptive plan for the Human Diet to help us all live long, vital, healthy lives.

Physician and biochemist Cate Shanahan, MD, examined diets around the world known to help people live longer, healthier lives - diets like the Mediterranean, Okinawa, and Blue Zone - and identified the four common nutritional habits, developed over millennia, that unfailingly produce strong, healthy, intelligent children and active, vital elders generation after generation. These four nutritional strategies - fresh food, fermented and sprouted foods, meat cooked on the bone, and organ meats - form the basis of what Dr. Cate calls the Human Diet.

Rooted in her experience as an elite athlete who used traditional foods to cure her own debilitating injuries, and combining her research with the latest discoveries in the field of epigenetics, Dr. Cate shows how all calories are not created equal; food is information that directs our cellular growth. Our family history does not determine our destiny: What you eat and how you live can alter your DNA in ways that affect your health and the health of your future children.

Deep Nutrition offers a prescriptive plan for how anyone can begin eating the Human Diet to:

  • Improve mood
  • Eliminate cravings and the need to snack
  • Boost fertility and have healthier children
  • Sharpen cognition and memory
  • Eliminate allergies and disease
  • Build stronger bones and joints
  • Get younger, smoother skin

Deep Nutrition cuts through today's culture of conflicting nutritional ideologies, showing how the habits of our ancestors can help us lead longer, healthier, more vital lives.

Worth a listen

Some interesting research but also a lot of common sense. A bit repetitive but well written

Good, but peculiar emphasis in early chapters

Some useful and interesting information, on vegetable oils in particular. The emphasis on genetic health and babies in the early chapters is a bit bizarre. My sense is that this is because it isn't what readers/listeners are expecting so early on given the title and subject matter. If this was moved to the end of the book it would seem less peculiar. I had a few moments when I nearly abandoned the book but I'm glad I persisted.

Mind blowing listen.

I don't know what people like Stephen Tegg are talking about. This book is as clear, concise and informative as possible. It's a grown up book for grown up people who already understand basics about how food works. If you want anything more simplified than this try watching Sesame Street, that Swedish chef cooks up a storm . But if you're ike me this book is for you. Amazing.

Will change the way you think about health

very well narrated and amazingly insightful. This could change your life. Medical profession is not designed to cure you but keep you sick. This book teaches you in a lucid manner how the right nutrition is the bedrock of good health

meh

Some things were useful, but i wish she would give more science backed advice rather than the constant “don’t eat sugar and don’t use vegetable oil “ argument over and over again.

Adrian

The book brings up some key points. Dangers of PUFA the main one. But overstates the dangers of sugar.

Some parts lasted longer than needed

I did struggle in some places, I am glad I had the audio book rather than a physical book.

it does sound at some points she is obsessed with having perfect beautiful children, however she is trying to get her point about the importance of nutrition in relation to genes.

she has a vast wealth of knowledge on the subject and the fundamental message behind this book makes complete sense.

I will re-listen to this again for reference, but there will be parts I will skip

I love this book. Life changing. Forget all you know about food, open your mind and read it. You won’t regret it.
