Summary

When a number of leading scientists disappear without a trace, concern grows within the international intelligence community. Are they being kidnapped? Blackmailed? Brainwashed?

One woman appears to have the key to the mystery. Unfortunately, Olive Betteron now lies in a hospital bed, dying from injuries sustained in a Moroccan plane crash.

Meanwhile, in a Casablanca hotel room, Hilary Craven prepares to take her own life. But her suicide attempt is about to be interrupted by a man who will offer her an altogether more thrilling way to die.

atypical Christie but very absorbing.

This is a truly odd book. Set within the context of the cold war, it held some excellent characterisation, esoecually if the central femake character. It contains some of that toe-curlingly dated Christie racism, eg of the Africans and especially a man described dusparagingly as 'yellow' , but the plot development is very engaging and well thought out. I dusliked EmiliaFox's acxents for non-English /Amerucan charcters - very geating and stereotyped -and it did detract from my enjoyment to some degree.

Agatha Christie just got better!

Have been an Agatha Christie fan from a very young age reading her books time & time again, but due to eye problems I listened to several of my favourite A.Christie books through Audible read by Emelia Fox...she has put life & dare I say even more enjoyment into them all once again!
Keep it up Audible & Emelia....

It was a struggle to listen

I struggled to listen because of the narration. The narrator puts on a ridiculous French accent for one of the characters. She tried too hard to sound sinister, and it was comical and annoying. She narrated both male and female parts which was odd to hear.

A Christie thriller

(*a few spoilers*)

This is one of Christie’s lesser-known novels - a standalone spy thriller featuring atomic scientists working in a secure complex high in the Atlas Mountains. Political intrigue, atmospheric descriptions of Casablanca, Marrakesh and Fez, a crazed genius with a dystopian vision and a heroine in the form of a middle-class housewife who is approached by MI5 to enter this world as a British spy under an assumed identity, never knowing who she can trust. A superb read and one I return to every few years when in the mood for atmosphere, intrigue and danger. I am transported to North Africa within a few pages. Were Christie writing this today, she might possibly weave a more climactic escape scene.

Thoroughly recommend, especially if you want to stay within the Christie canon but have recently over-indulged on your beloved Poirot, as I so often do!

Destination Unknown

Good, not as great as Poirot, but as a stand alone novel it I enjoyed it. Brilliantly narrated by Emilia Fox who brings unique voices to each character.

Good Narration

Ms. Fox did a great job of bringing all the characters in the novel to life.
