Summary

Bloomsbury presents Double Cross by Ben Macintyre, read by Michael Tudor Barnes.

D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit....

At the heart of the deception was the 'Double Cross System', a team of double agents whose bravery, treachery, greed and inspiration succeeded in convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong Allied invasion force. These were not conventional warriors, but their masterpiece of deceit saved thousands of lives. Their codenames were Bronx, Brutus, Treasure, Tricycle and Garbo. This is their story.

Critic reviews

"Utterly gripping." (Anthony Beevor, Daily Telegraph)

"I have seldom enjoyed a spy story more than this one, and fiction will make dreary reading hereafter." (Max Hastings, Sunday Times)

"Macintyre is a first-class narrative historian...as pacy as a thriller and better written than most." (Sunday Telegraph)

Double Cross

I love Ben Macintyre, all his books are excellent. I thought this one took me a while to really get into but once I did I thought it was a great story. Always brilliantly told.

Another wonderful Ben Macintyre book

A thoughtful and typically gripping story form Ben McIntyre perfectly read. It’s rare to find such an accessible history book that mixes necessary detail with a story that, if it were fiction, would be hard to believe. I would thoroughly recommend this, as all his other books. I must admit I knew nothing at all about this important episode in WW2 and it’s undoubted importance in the success of the D-Day landings.

Amazing! Heartbreaking at the end

This one was a little more difficult to follow than the other Ben MacIntyre books I've listened to as there were so many names to keep track of but it was a story well told and beautifully written. I shed tears at the end.

Absolutely fascinating

I stumbled across Agent Zig Zag and was enthralled by it, so had to also listen to Double Cross. It took a bit of time to get into it, to remember who everyone was, but what a fascinating story.
It was also well narrated. Some reviews didn’t like the accents but I found they gave more context to the characters.

Another superb story and performance

Seemed a bit complicated to start with but once I got to know all the players I loved it. What a cast of real characters. It makes me nostalgic for those times in some ways.

Fascinating and revelatory

All the more fascinating because the tale is true. The build up was a little confusing with so many characters but the roles they played in the D Day deception plan was spellbinding. A great listen
