Summary

When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight, his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands.

Flamin' good

I purchased the hardback version of this book and Eldest for my stepson last Christmas because he has a thing about Dragons as lots of boys do. With the movie version hitting the cinemas soon I thought I'd listen to this to see which I enjoy the most. The first thing that struck me about Eragon is the talent the writer has to transport you to a believable mythical time and place especially as I believe he was 15 when the book was written. If you love Lord of the Rings and such books you could do a lot worse than this as the feel is very much the same.Dwarfs ,Elves and Shades are just a sample of characters you'll come across, some good some evil but there is battle action , magic , happiness and sorrow all rolled together. The narrator is skilled at creating character voices from Eragon himself through the spectrum of Riders, Kings , Dragons and such and my only reason for not giving this audiobook 5 stars is that it ended just when I was so hungry to find out what happens next. I will be downloading Eldest without a doubt.

Well worth 9 hours of listening!

Having already read the book, it seemed a bit indulgent to get the audio version for a long trip - however it was well worth it! This audio version will become a favourite for sure - little details stand out on retelling. It's an all action, magical mix of adventure, spell casting and battle. It would suit a Tolkien or Pullman fan especially - Paolini certainly has a wide ranging vocabulary! A terrific book from start to finish, narrated in style. Highly recommended.

Not bad, but others of the genre are better...

A pleasant listen, but compared to Garth Nix's Sabriel or Neil Gaiman's Stardust, this somehow lacked direction, and felt less rounded, a bit more two-dimensional. It's not to say we didn't enjoy it, but we won't be buying the other members of the trilogy. In contrast, Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen had us on the edge of our seats. To be fair, Eragon is probably better for slightly younger listeners, dealing less with themes of emerging awareness of early adult relationships etc., and it has pace and zing. But it doesn't have the complete originality of the other books, or the mesmerising quality.

It's a shame so much was left out of the film.

The actors were excellent in the film as well as the graphics. The dragon was also beautiful.
If the story was exactly the same in the film as it was in the book, it would have been so much better. A great story, I'll be reading the next one.

I really admire the narrator for his perserverance

I downloaded this book out of curiosity, there had been some hype when the book was released about the fact that the author was 17 years old. The fact that the author was 17 yrs old becomes obvious very early on. It tends towards being clich?d and predictable. Some parts of the story just don't make much sense. If you are already a fan of the fantasy genre forget about this one, get it out of the library if you're curious about it. If you've never read or listened to a fantasy book before, there is a slim chance you might enjoy it, but there are far better fantasy books out there. The two stars are for the narrator in persevering with the material he was given.

Abridged Version

I did not realize at the time of purchase, but this is an abridged version.

I did like the narrator largely; their voices matched what I had in my head.

Good Listen

This is a large book. I've struggled to re-read the paprerback so opted for the audiobook. The reader's female impersonations are sometimes odd but he is easy to listen to and the story flows well. Anyone struggling with the book should definitely try the audio version.

Great story

Its a fab story written with brilliant description definitely recommend it. its not like some other fantasy stores where its hard to follow along with the story it is really easy for anyone to follow. There are eight chapters in this audio book but all the books chapters are contained it these eight, it is just that the books chapters are short and so they have merged multiple chapters together.
