Summary

With Paul Noble’s simple, relaxed approach you will learn in a way that suits you – without having to memorise long lists of words you won’t use, scribbling notes as you listen, or feeling frustrated. Instead, Paul will introduce you to the basics of the Italian language and guide you through 2 hours of everyday essentials that are practical, fun, and applicable. Just listen, interact, and learn wherever you are.

Whatever your experience with languages, this is the course to get you speaking Italian quickly, confidently, and with no chance of failure.

A native-speaking Italian expert will help you to perfect your pronunciation and allow you to quickly make your new knowledge work for you in a variety of everyday scenarios. A downloadable booklet is also included to use as a reference and revision tool.

Paul Noble left school unable to speak a language – having found that the traditional learning methods left him feeling ‘confused, incapable and unable to really say anything’. Determined that there must be a better way to learn, Paul spent years devising his own unique method of learning languages which cuts out all the grammar, all the memorisation, and all the stress. He began using his method to teach in his Language Institute and, thousands of students later, he prides himself on never having had a student fail.

Once you’ve finished the Essentials course, continue your language learning journey by downloading Learn Italian with Paul Noble for Beginners – Complete Course.

Praise for other titles in the Paul Noble range: "More than I ever managed in five years of French at school." (Tom Meltzer, The Guardian)

Reasonable, but room for improvement

Positives: this takes you at a gentle pace (possibly too gentle at times!), and with lots and lots of repetition you really do learn what you're being taught.

Negatives: some things you are taught I don't think are particularly helpful for a beginner crash course. For example "I would like to know why you haven't ordered a taxi" is good in terms of sentence structure, but as a phrase is useless to beginners, because let's face it, you won't understand the answer! Instead some time could be spent on learning other phrases which would be of more help to someone looking for the basics for travel, such as "can I have the bill?" and "where are the toilets?". I think there's also space for a bit more vocabulary, especially food and drink, as ordering in a cafe or restaurant is something you're pretty much certain to do when travelling. For example, rather than just "I would like a coffee" it would be helpful to be able to say whether you would like milk, or sugar. And finally, actively practicing numbers would also be helpful, rather than just a track at the end.

I've also used Paul Noble to study some Spanish (the longer version). As I mentioned earlier you do drill the phrases, they do sink in. However, a weakness in the Paul Noble series is that while you get quite good at saying what you want to say, there is no practice for listening. A few tracks where you listen and translate to English, rather than just translating from English in to the study language would be beneficial in my opinion.

Best learning experience ever

I'm usually good with languages but this method of learning, by simple repetition of likely phrases in different sentences, is phenomenally useful and quick. I started playing it as I got on the plane and by the time I landed, had most of the vocabulary I needed for my four-day stay. A perfect method for learning essential phrases.

not enough detail

too much emphasis on particular phrases/words but he teaches them well. I know it was a short course but I feel like I've only 5 phrases and he could have done with a few classic tourist phrases - I'm looking for;. where is etc

This is how learning languages should be

Very happy! I really wanted to learn enough to get by in Italy and recognise words i hear. You're basically learning like u did with your first language but not childish. You have to really understand language and learning to put this lesson together. Pauses are good length! I can do this in the car and while washing up. I actually learnt a bit about pronouncing letters and numbers and the c and r sounds before this at a class ...yrs ago..which i managed to recall and link in with this learning so i hadnt wasted that as i thought. i could have managed perfectly fine without prior knowlrdge though.

Excellent

I have about 3 or 4 books, CDs etc by other names and I can without a doubt say that none of them come close. Through this audio book by Paul Noble, and also the longer course he has produced, I've learned more Italian, more effectively, and in such a short space of time, that I've surprised the doubters (friends in Italy) who used to shake their heads at me thinking I was hopeless in Italian. On myy last trip to Italy I was complimented more than a few times by Italians, who all said my Italian was good. Thanks Paul for producing such a great course and technique for learning language. Truly the best ever. Great job

Useful!

I really liked it. It helps you with the most difficult part of a language - actually generating the sentence in a dialogue.
I think it works even better if you are already somewhat familiar with the language at an early stage. It definitely is what the title says...essential Italian that will help you have a very basic conversation with the locals if you travel there. I am excited to listen to the rest of the series.

Good for learning in the car. Some repetition.

Nicely narrated, easy to understand. Good timing so you can try the exercises yourself. Some of it was a bit repetitive but I guess that's what we need to help us remember it.
