Summary
John Milton is a ghost. He was Number One. The most dangerous assassin in Group Fifteen, the black-ops organisation that solves problems when diplomacy has failed. Now Milton is Her Majesty's most wanted fugitive - an anonymous loner with a deadly set of skills.
So when he is arrested following a brawl in a Texas bar, the last person he expects to bail him out is a glamorous operative from the Russian Secret Service.
Milton is blackmailed into finding his predecessor as Number One. But she's a ghost, too, and just as dangerous as him. He finds himself in deep trouble, playing the Russians against the British in a desperate attempt to save the life of his oldest friend. Some ghosts are better left alone. But these two have been disturbed, and now there's going to be hell to pay.
Mark Dawson has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, The Art of Falling Apart and Subpoena Colada have been published in multiple languages.

Superb Milton Adventure...
The John Milton Series really is a first class read. If you enjoy the action/adventure/espionage genre then you'll really get a lot from this superb series.
David Thorpe brings Milton to life with ease, and you're quickly absorbed into the story once again.
In this instance, Milton's past catches up with him, and he's soon having to balance hos loyalties between his friends, his former employer and those holding a gun to his head. Drama, action and adventure all the way, as Milton moves through the US, then on to Russia and the UK.
This can be enjoyed as a standalone book, but you'll enjoy it much more having benefitted from the back story from previous Milton titles that have gone before.

Getting Straight to the Point
This relatively short Milton novel is actually probably my favourite to date. There's a bit less depth as you'd expect but it gets straight into the action and moves along quickly, There's a fascinating look back into Milton's past from which characters emerge into the present resulting in a fairly breathtaking and action-packed conclusion.
David Thorpe, well if you've read the previous books you'll know the matter of fact directness he brings to the stories which suit him down to the ground.
If you liked what went before I'm sure you'll be happy with this as despite the brevity Dawson packs a surprising amount of back story into a fast moving main plot.

Milton really finds his stride
I have really grown to love this series.. This is a gripping story with all the features you would expect from a great crime/thriller novel. Espionage, betrayal, various locations, and a great rolling story that carries you along. It's punchy, engaging and full of energy. Well worth a read. My only thoughts are that as good as David Thorpe is, some times his narration/character voices are more caricature than they need to be.. But over all this is an excellent novel and story and highly recommended.

Upcoming Audible releases
The John Milton series by Mark Dawson is excellent, but that not why I'm writing this review. The summer releases of new thriller novels by the best authors has already begun with Brad Thor's release this week. Since I always preorder those that most interest me (and a few other flyers), I'm going to list what I consider to be the best upcoming thrillers by date and author. I have all of these on preorder now.
June 21 The Traitor's Story by Kevin Wignall (stand alone)
June 21 The Pursuit by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg with
Scott Brick narrating (Fox & O'Hare series)
June 28 First Strike by Ben Coes (Dewey Andras series)
June 28 Ghosts of War by Brad Taylor (Pike Logan & Jennifer Cahill)
July 12 The Black Widow by Daniel Silva (Gabriel Allon series)
July 12 Ghost Sniper by Scott McEwen (Sniper Elite series)
August 1 The Jungle by Mark Dawson (John Milton series)
August 16 Rise the Dark by Michael Koryta (stand alone)
August 30 A Great Reckoning by Louise Perry (Gamache series)
I'll add that on October 11 the next Mitch Rapp series book Order to Kill by Kyle Mills will be released. I miss Vince Flynn, but Mills did a fine with the last book. It is available for preorder.
For those, including me, who cannot wait for the next Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child it is not yet available for preorder at Audible but the title is Night School and will be released on November 7.
If you are looking for a good author to try late in July Australian Liane Moriarty releases Truly Madly Guilty. It is available for preorder at Audible. Release is July 26. Expect fun, not intense suspense.
Finally, it's not yet available for preorder at Audible but Mark Greaney will release Tom Clancy: True Faith and Allegiance (Ryan Jr. series) on December 6.

Wow, just WOW. Best so far, how can #5 match?
This is by far THE best of the series so far. Book 1 was great with a few little glitches, but this one was realistic, believable, and exciting throughout. Dealing with old enemies turned friends(?), double crossing the double-crossers so all the bad guys lose, action and retribution and salvation, and a fine, fine ending. If the series ends here, it's a good one. But, wait, there's more! Let's just hope 5 can keep up with 4!
David Thorpe is amazing in his narration--any country, any dialect, any social level, any size person. So much better than those much-touted dramatizations (I couldn't tell anyone apart and you could see the studio mikes in front of them; in these books you are there in the midst of the action)!
No more needs saying-- if you like black ops and governmental assassins, especially one trying to do good, this is the series for you.

Makes You Disbelieve in Ghost
Dejá Vú all over again. Okay, at least Dawson gets his do-good hero out of Dodge and off to Europe for this in another string of action scenes that eventually end more unprobably than any of the first three books in this series. It's one thing to get listeners to suspend disbelief, another to demand that they suspend any IQ points over say, 65. Perhaps he believes that we will put up with anything, or maybe he's trying to discover where we just leave the series?
Well I'm close to exactly that point just now, and I was a fanboy. Okay, I'll try one more in this series to see what happens, but I'm going to do it cautiously. Lookout for my review of 'Sword of God' to see how that works out. Maybe you should look there before you purchase this Dawson book.
David Thorpe continues as a mediocre dialectitian. His American voices continue to be forced. As long as Dawson remains exciting, I can overlook Thorpe's odd Bubba-southern accents. No, I can tolerate them -- but I'm beginning to grit my teeth.

Exciting book and wonderful narration..
You can't help but like John Milton. He can be kind and brutal at the same time. This was about Russians that he was doing something for and, of course, he did. Lots of killing, no clue how many.
What was weird was that Beatrix Rose was in this one and I've read all her books so I know she's already dead, of cancer. Her books were fantastic, and so were the ones about her daughter Isabella. Try John Milton, you won't be sorry.
No romance and the F-bomb is used 8 times.
As for the narration: David Thorpe is simply fantastic. His voices are perfect.
