The Sunday Times best seller

This is Britain as you've never heard it.

This is Britain as it has never been told.

From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the 20th century to the teens of the 21st, Girl, Woman, Other follows a cast of 12 characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They're each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope....

A brilliant story - slightly spoiled by the reader

I actually listened to this book in one go. Very engaging and a real story of a range of today's womxn.
However, the reader made so many errors in pronunciation of words and phrases that it was rather irritating. She was better with the traditional African parts and OK with the Caribbean parts but didn't seem to have more than GCSE level understanding of English, if that.
I wonder why she was asked to be the reader!? But more concerning, I wonder why the publisher didn't get her to re-record all the bits she couldn't pronounce properly?

Great story, read poorly

Such an excellent story let down by really poor reading. The reader pronounced words incorrectly and it was difficult to distinguish between the characters. She read with one note throughout. Tbh, after a short time I decided that this was one that I was going to read myself because the reader was ruining it for me. How much better it would be if they could get a better actress to read this.

Best audiobook of 2019

Loved this. A story that really benefited from audio format. Wide ranging with huge appeal I cried at the end partly for the emotional conclusion mostly because it was over.

wonderfully rich and moving

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the performance was wonderful. such a powerful assertion of complex diverse characters that challenges old troupes and portrayals of Black womxn.

An excellent book, performed poorly

Call me a perfectionist but I expect a book to be read verbatim, and here this is not the case.
I feared there was something wrong because some phrases just did not make sense.
Then I bought the book and played the audiobook while reading and discovered lots and lots of mispronounced words. Prefixes ommited like un- encumbered, totally affected the meaning of the phrase.
So many mistakes distract the listener from enjoying the audiobook.
Needless to say, the book is my favourite 2020 read so far.
The audiobook is by far the most hastily rendered I have ever purchased.
Very poor performance...

Littered with mispronunciations!

So many basic words mispronounced! Poorly read - the story is super and very well structured though, a joy to read, not so to listen to in this audiobook.

This took me a while to get into, but I absolutely loved the last quarter

I found it hard going to start with, even as far as the first 60%. I’m so pleased I stuck at it.

Narration poor.

The narrator needs to research how to pronounce words she is unfamiliar with.

Flat narration, she is not a story teller .

Compelling Writing but disappointing reading

Having started listening to this audible version I finished the book by reading it in paper form. The reading was so disappointingly bad that it virtually put me off the rest of the book which would have been a shame.
