Summary
A Good Morning America 'January Book That Can Get Us Through Anything'
A Most Anticipated Novel of 2022 by The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Entertainment Weekly, New York Post, PopSugar, Shondaland, Yahoo!, and Crime Reads
A destitute woman deceives her way into the guesthouse of a Hollywood Hills mansion and inadvertently becomes a target in the twisted game of the wealthy family upstairs in the next intoxicating novel from Eliza Jane Brazier.
Lyla has always believed that life is a game she is destined to win, but her husband, Graham, takes the game to dangerous levels. The wealthy couple invites self-made success stories to live in their guesthouse and then conspires to ruin their lives. After all, there is nothing worse than a bootstrapper.
Demi has always felt like the odds were stacked against her. At the end of her rope, she seizes a risky opportunity to take over another person’s life and unwittingly becomes the subject of the upstairs couple’s wicked entertainment. But Demi has been struggling forever, and she’s not about to go down without a fight.
In a twist that neither woman sees coming, the game quickly devolves into chaos and rockets toward an explosive conclusion.
Because every good rich person knows: in money and in life, it’s winner takes all. Even if you have to leave a few bodies behind.
Critic reviews
"The rich live differently than the rest of us, and that's never more evident than this chilling account of one family that plays a sick and twisted game with their tenants."—Good Housekeeping
“With writing that truly embodies the raw evil of greed, Brazier crafts cunning characters whom readers will be so excited to hate.”—Shondaland
“Taut, chilling, and completely original…elegantly explores the chasm between the haves and the have-nots.”—Ellery Lloyd, New York Times bestselling author of The Club

Good, but wish it was more…
In the beginning, I giggled, rubbed my hands together & bragged to my husband, “finally, a good one!” I wish I could say it kept getting better, but it capped off early… not worse, not better, just flatly good.
While some parts of this twisted plot have been done before, it is wholly clever and unique, and the performances are fine. It’s just missing that special ⚡️ . Maybe if I hadn’t read in reviews that it is “deviously hilarious”, I wouldn’t have had so much hope in finding a dark thriller that could also make me laugh. Those books are so rare, and they are my very favorite. For me, aside from a few decent one liners, there are a lot of missed opportunities for humor.
Wish I could love-love-love it like so many others do, but I’ll just have to settle for liking it.

Hooked right from the start! Honestly, Karissa Vacker can tell me a story any day and I will listen but Eliza did a good job keeping me hooked. Sophia Amoss was super engaging as Demi (a new fave narrator). You either love or hate this book. I have never read anything like it so this really piqued my interest in Satire and Psychological thrillers.

This is the PERFECT guilty pleasure book!
I absolutely loved this thriller. Lyla is married to Graham, the perfect husband with the perfect life. They are rich and beautiful. Only, Graham gets bored very easily and it's up to Lyla to keep him entertained or else.
This book was quick and witty. I loved the dark humor and sarcastic comedy, but I also think the author was bidding to some serious issues in the US. Shake and vapid came to mind often. I just loved it.

Enjoyable but frustrating
I like strange stories and this one certainly fit the bill. I also found the characters to be pleasantly dislikable and quirky. I was excited to hear about the games this family plays on their tenants and that's where things began to fall short. Just a broad brushstroke or two about one or two people they've F'd up but no compelling detail to get you riled up. Not even the Elvira character. Like, I'm not entirely sure what happened there. So, listening to Lyla's attempt at the game seemed... inadequate. Which, I guess was the point, but...IDK. Because I didn't really understand HOW they played the game with others, I couldn't really "get" Lyla's scheming. If that makes sense.
And the every weekend golf trips? Like...every weekend? I don't get it. I needed more on that, too.
Then I listened to the last couple chapters three times and the third to the last again before I finally figured out the whole what's-in-the-fountain thing and how it got in there. (BTW, that's not a spoiler bc it's in the first five seconds of the book.) But also, where'd Demi go?
And finally, the telling of the same scenes by two different characters didn't really bother me. But just know that's happening so you don't get thrown for a loop when the character shift occurs.
So I'm going to say this was an enjoyable (great narration, weird story, quirky characters) albeit frustrating (lacking depth in important areas) listen. If I were talking to my pre-listen self, I'd say, "Go for it!"

Wasn’t into it
Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this book at this particular time but I really didn’t enjoy it much. I know a lot of people thought it was really fun to read but not so much for me. There were definitely American Psycho vibes but most of the characters were very unlikable and I just didn’t care enough to even be amused by it.

Psychological thriller meets dark comedy. Guilty pleasure read for sure.
I can’t stand Lyla, the emotionally wrecked wife who is a bit paranoid. She gets more and more paranoid as the story goes on. She’s innocent and disturbed at the same time. She’s married to Graham who is a straight psychopath! His mother Margo is a narcissist through and through.
If I enjoyed it so much why the low rating? While I loved the plot and the even the “bad rich people” characters, my biggest issue is with the changing POV and timelines. For example, you’ll get a scene through Lyla’s POV and several chapters later you return to the scene through Demi’s POV.
Not withstanding the POV issue, this is a great read.

Just listened to this book straight through. If I could compare this book in styles I would say, if you liked books like You and Dexter you are gonna love this book. Wouldn’t surprise me if there was a movie made from it. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
