Summary
A group of kids in the '90s had a dream to make their voices heard - and this book documents their seminal impact on today's pop culture.
DJ Target grew up in Bow under the shadow of Canary Wharf, with money looming close on the skyline. The 'Godfather of Grime' Wiley and Dizzee Rascal first met each other in his bedroom. They were all just grime kids on the block back then and didn't realise they were to become pioneers of an international music revolution. A movement that permeates deep into British culture and beyond.
Household names were born out of those housing estates, and the music industry now jumps to the beat of their gritty reality rather than the tune of glossy aspiration. Grime has shaken the world, and Target is revealing its explosive and expansive journey in full, using his own unique insight and drawing on the input of grime's greatest names.

I love Grime
This book took me back to a time where I partied hard in London and shows how far UK music has come.
I love grime and would recommend any grime fan read this.

a comprehensive history or now UK music took shape
For anyone who is interested in UK music be that Grime, garage or jungle this audio book is essential. Dj targets unique perspective from a youth first experiencing the UK jungle emergence to his times setting up Pay as you go cartel, becoming a prominent figure on the pirate radio scene and being on the forefront of when the garage sound started to evolve into the new kind of music that allowed mcs to take the centre stage. This audio book is a must listen for anyone that would like to learn where crime came from and the Amazing achievements that have been achieved from this captivating music genre.

A POV of Grime
As a grime fan I was looking forward to this read. There was some interesting parts as DJ Target was there for some pivotal moments that only people within the same room would know which was enlighten to hear.
However I do feel the timeline of this book is all over the place and lacks structure
One moment you are at the rise of grime then you are in the middle of the resurgence only to be taken back to Roll Deep making an album. The only consistent timeline was from Jungle to Garage/Grime after this point it goes everywhere

Sensational 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Big shout to Target 🎯 absolutely nailed it!! I lived through the early noughties growing up from just after the start of the early days of grime & was & always will be a serious grime head 👏 I already knew more than most on the culture but target opened my eyes to a few things I wasn’t privy to or had a lack of knowledge, the depth of this book is outstanding!!! Can’t recommend this book enough it’s a big man ting & I say it with chest!! 👊🏼💙💫🥶

Brilliant!!
I really enjoyed listening to this book, and finished it in two days in between work, I was that hooked to it! It is very well written and narrated by DJ Target. You’ll stop at times to look up the tracks to jog your memory, and wow it takes you down a lane lol. This is a very good history and foundation of grime music and when it got closer to the end of the book I wondered how he would finish it because it seemed like he could’ve just kept going! I’d highly recommend this book. Anyone who watched grime evolve over the years will really appreciate this. And if you don’t know anything about grime this is a great foundation. DJ Target was in the scene from the beginning and so comes from that well rooted angle.
The only thing I felt that was missing was about the female MCs. Whilst I appreciate there weren’t many, he briefly touched on Lisa Mafia, and Ms Dynamite and I feel like there could’ve been a lot more said about them because seeing females in the game had such an impact on female listeners and inspired more girls to join the ring in rapping. It felt like I as a woman could be a part of it. There was Shystie, Lady Sovereign, Lady Fury, Baby Blue - although she was probably more hip hop I think. I also think that perhaps Target was more around the male MCs so female MCs might not have been at the front and centre of his mind when it came to writing this book. Other than that though, it is all good and I thoroughly enjoyed listening it. I’ll be listening again.
