About this listen

Lucas Carr went to Glenbury Hall, an old country manor house turned hotel. He signed in at reception, took his key, and went upstairs to his room. But he never got there. Somehow he vanished along the way, with not a single clue to suggest what might have happened to him.

Lucas belonged to the same mysterious organization that employs Ishmael and Penny, so they are sent in to solve the mystery. But when they arrive at grim and isolated Glenbury Hall, they discover it has a reputation as one of the most haunted old houses in England. None of the usual headless monks or walled-up nuns—just stories of lost souls that dance with the statues in the grounds; doors that won’t stay shut, and rooms that aren’t always there; and something that prowls the house in the early hours, endlessly searching. They say . . . it crawls.

Does Lucas’ disappearance have something to do with the organization or the Hall’s haunted past?

Usual story spoilt by new/awful narrator

Predictably amusing Ishmael Jones story. No need for an active brain cell, but enjoyably relaxing—or usually so. Not my preference of new narrator at all.
We had just about given up on it when we tried it at 1.25x play speed and it was just about tolerable. Puts me off any further pre orders until the narrator is confirmed as that makes or breaks a good book.

Don’t believe the rating, the new narrator ruins this audiobook

The narrator ruined the book for me. The story was what you expect from an Ishmael Jones book but the narration was full of strange pauses, bad pronunciation and a complete lack of character differentiation. Hopeless.

Good story, poor narration.

As usual, a reasonably good story with a slight twist on the haunted house genre. Unfortunately, changing narrators has been a mistake, as Matthew Brenher has a monotonous voice with few changes of tone as he switches between characters. He is also unable to modulate his voice as a character would in conversation, making parts of the story become boring.
Overall I still enjoyed the story, just not as much as with Gildart Jackson narrating.

Repetitive story

The narrator was different, run at 1.25 speed to improve. I’ve listened to several of Mr Greens stories and found them very similar just different characters. I won’t be listening to anymore.

Terrible narration

It sounds like the book was narrated by AI. The story itself was the usual fun mystery but completely ruined by what sounds like a computer reading the words with zero enthusiasm or expression. Speeding it up made it only slightly better.

Shame about the narrator

The story and writing were as great as all the other in the series, but the choice of narrator for this book was a very bad choice. The story misses the gravitas that only Gildert can bring to the story.

Where is Gildart Jackson?

My initial reaction when I started listening was to bemoan the change of narrator. I love listening to Mr Jackson and early on in this novel came the first of many mispronunciations of topiary which grate each time the word appears. Nonetheless I did like Mr Brenher’s voice which isn’t too dissimilar to Gildart Jackson’s and I can’t recall any other mispronunciations. It’s always irritating when there is a change of narrator if one has come to love the sound of a particular voice and associates a voice with an author such as David Monteath with Dorothy Dunnett and Mark Douglas-Home, Jeff Harding with John Connolly and Lee Child. However Matthew Brenher, topiary excepting, did a good job and as always Simon R Green has written another fabulous instalment of the fascinating Ishmael Jones. I love this character and enjoy the badinage between him and the feisty Penny. I’d been waiting impatiently for the next in this series as it took longer to arrive than expected but it was as good as always with its twists and turns and I liked the historical background and interesting house. But please can we return to Mr Jackson?

Disappointed

I have waited a long time for this and am so disappointed. I cannot even listen to any more and want to return it! They have changed the narrator which has altered the whole tone and characters of Ishmael and Penny! It just does not work for me any more! Back to playing repeats of the other ten books for me 🥲

A good series ruined

I was so pleased when I found this latest book in the series but what a disappointment. Terrible laboured narration, nothing like the previous books. Mispronunciations and too much emphasis on “I said” “Penny said” etc. totally ruined the flow of the story which was already treacly slow. Book could have been half the length.
