Summary

The brand-new medieval adventure from the master of historical fiction.

1368. France, Spain and England prepare for war. In Italy, the pope and the Visconti princes are battling for bloody supremacy.

The worst years of Sir William Gold's life are about to begin.

Leaving the side of his commander, Sir John Hawkwood, William embarks on a new journey that will bring him fame and favour - until a heart-breaking personal tragedy leads him to put down his sword.

But men of war can't stay out of battle for long. Gold yearns to return to Italy and rejoin Hawkwood. Only now the game of the Italian princes is changing and, as chaos descends, Gold must finally decide who he stands for....

Superb, as ever.

A lifelong love of history, especially medieval history, including reenacting the period of Edward I reign many moons ago, has never led me to any author who can transport me to those periods in such a real way as Christian can. And he has done it yet again. Thank you, Christian, for what you do.
Narration is also superb.

Amazing series of books, superbly narrated by Peter Noble.

Astonishing amount of detail which must have taken so long to research. This series has been so interesting and gripping I am sad to reach the end. Luckily Christian has written other books in the same genre with Peter Noble narrating I am looking forward to listening to all of them.

Possibly the best yet

Each book in the series is like an epic but none more so than this one. Now on a par with the very best at writing historical fiction and with Peter Noble at the reins of narrating I would put this series up against Bernard Cornwell any day of the week.
Can't wait for the next in the series.

Very boring, half the book is wasted on pilgrimage

This is quite a different book to the last 4, which I think are excellent. This book spends alot of time on a journey of pilgrimage. It gets very boring which is a real shame as I loved the past entries in this series. I skipped at least 3 hours of the story as it was just rambling on and on

Machiavelli would have approved!

Great story. The chessboard of Europe's internecine squabbles is on fire. And William Gold is right in the middle of it. Recommended

Lovely continuation of Gold’s biography, average delivery.

This has all the same excellent qualities of the previous novels, with the same flat delivery.
