Summary

AN AMAZON.COM BEST MYSTERY/THRILLER OF THE YEAR

Mallory is delighted to have a new job looking after gorgeous four-year-old Teddy. She's been sober for a year and a half, and she's sure her new nannying role in the affluent suburbs will help keep her on the straight and narrow.

That is until Teddy starts to draw disturbing pictures of his imaginary friend, Anya. It is quite clear to Mallory and to Teddy's parents, even in his crude childlike style, that the woman Teddy is drawing in his pictures is dead.

Teddy's crayons are confiscated and his paper locked away. But the drawings somehow keep coming, telling a frightening story of a woman murdered...and they're getting more sophisticated. But if Teddy isn't drawing the pictures anymore, who is? And what are they trying to tell Mallory about her new home?

Critic reviews

"Whip-smart, creepy as hell and masterfully plotted, Hidden Pictures is the best new thriller I've read in years. Destined to be a classic of the genre." (Ransom Riggs, best-selling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children)

"I read Hidden Pictures and loved it. The surprises really surprise and it has that hard-to-achieve propulsiveness that won't let you put it down. And the pictures are terrific!" (Stephen King)

Transphobic pamphlet

Unfortunately, this book is a product of Jason's political agenda. It's basically a list of right-wing dog whistles and propaganda.

Nope

This was really bad. I wish I could unlisten to this mess of a book.

Enjoyable, but a bit daft

The main character is very annoying. There is a decent twisteroo, but overall not hugely believable. I suppose anything paranormal isn’t totally believable, but it was the everyday humanisms I didn’t believe! I’m very surprised this has such rave reviews!

fab spooky story

fab book. just enough to be spooky without big scares. Great narrator too, really bought the characters too life, and bought suspense to the story. highly recommended

Amazing listen

The person chosen to read this story really suited the story itself but the story was amazing, couldn't stop listening to it at all.

Don’t understand the hype

Was ok but it was just basic really, would I recommend? Not really, though might suit younger audiences.

Overall a disappointment

May be for a younger listener but I found this story overall quite dull and the big twist was a let down, for me personally. The narration was ok, May be it just didn't live up to the hype for me.

Awful narration

Wanted to like this, but honestly couldn’t get passed the irritating narration. It’s like someone doing baby talk and that’s not just for the little boy in the story. It’s grating. Disappointing!

Takes a while to get going

Some of the character builds aren’t integral to the story which makes them a little dull. story ends well. Written more like a movie script which has always annoyed me but makes it very easy to follow.

very dumb mc

I found it hard to sympathize with the main character because she kept making stupid decisions despite her circumstances. She was given an opportunity to fix her life but despite knowing this, kept giving the parents reasons to sack her, and repeatedly put herself in danger. I found it very frustrating and hard to care about her. I actually found myself rooting for the antagonists by the end.
The plot itself was good enough, though. I just really didn't connect with the main character, because she was ridiculously stupid.
