Summary

Rob didn't think of himself as anyone special, but when a pitch-black portal tried to wrap his best friend in chains, he stepped up without thinking and found himself ensnared instead.

His moment of heroism results in being torn away from everyone he knew and loved, kidnapped by an unknown force that leaves him with a note in his pocket stating: "Good luck."

After being thrown into the wilderness of Elatra, a hostile fantasy world ruled by levels, stats, progression, and bizarre video game logic, he finds himself entirely out of his depth. Armed with nothing but a sword and the clothes on his back, he sets out on his the first day, and almost dies. On the second day, he almost dies again. On the third, he began to notice a worrying trend. And almost dies.

It doesn't get any easier from there.

Overcoming the wilds is just the first step in his journey; the society of Elatra is incredibly hostile to humans, having just come off of a devastating war that left over half the population dead, and getting the locals to trust the last human in existence is a struggle in and of itself. Between being powerless in a world that hates him and suffering under a System that is altering his mind in unwanted ways, Rob quickly finds that monsters aren't nearly the biggest thing to worry about.

As far as LitRPG isekai adventures go, Rob drew the short straw in many ways. But that's okay - all the bullshit in the world won't keep him down. He'll carve out a place in this world with his bare hands if necessary. He'll survive, and then he'll thrive.

Whether anyone wants him to or not.

Hilarious and witty

Good litrpg book, funny as heck.
as a fan of the genre (including stat readouts. don't come at me) this was an original and compelling story. Laughing at the dumb/strange choices the main character makes while sobbing at other points of the book makes this a definite 5/5.

A good start

I've listened to the first two books and they are enjoyable without being particularly original. I like Neil Hellegers narration style and this isn't as entertaining as the 'The Good/Bad Guys' series that he narrates, it's still a decent effort. I don't know if this is one I'll stick with long term but for the moment I'm enjoying it.

Brilliant

SPOILERS. Narrator knew exactly how to express the books ingenious writing. The play between seriousness and humour is fantastic and only adds to the book. The trope of trapped in another world has been done 1000 times but the spin of the war wiping out all of humanity and his role and reaction to being the only one around is played great. Its like the author read my mind multiple times, As I asked, "Shouldn't MC be kinda sad about being the only human and having to kill things and survive, which coming from earth is a huuuge change" and boom nervous break down. Awesome. Well not for the MC but you get me.

Kept me hooked and I smashed it out in 1 go, now I'm off to bed.
100% recommend

Exactly what you expect

Exactly like you’d expect for the most part. Definitely a much more normal reaction that you’d give if you were the one sucked into a different world and already recommended to others to have a listen

A thrilling ride from start to finish.

Now let me prefice this review by saying this:
If you do not enjoy LitRPG books, you might struggle with this one, but if you do like the genre, this is a must listen.

The story is innovative, the main character is very interesting (borderline insane) and the lore shrouded in mystery. It's a fresh take on a genre that can be very samey at times so I very much appreciate it. The author doesn't shy away from profanity which is also very fresh and fun.

Now there is one thing that IS very prominent in this book: Stat readouts...A LOT of stat readouts. They are necessary at times, but they do get tedious after a while.

The narrator did a good job, even if he struggles with female voices (mostly because of his naturally deep and kind of gravely voice I assume) but he is nice to listen to so I don't have many complaints.

Definetly a series I plan on continuing and recommending to others.
