Story
I began to suspect something was wrong with the gothic building when its family fled in the middle of the night, the children screaming, the mother crying. They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait. At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him.

Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than 300 miles from its intended course...a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

Another great book
I've been waiting for a new book and this did not disappoint. i was gripped by the story and couldn't wait to get back to find out if the monster had claimed another victim. Even the ending threw me a little so if your thinking about getting this title I can recommend it. Now the only problem is waiting till Darcy writes her next book

Good but slow going at times
The book started off really well but then it felt like it took forever to get going. It really started to go somewhere about chapter 30 onwards. And then towards the end it seemed to drag and I found it a bit of a chore to finish the book. But I had to as I needed to find out if they made it out, who the hunter was.
It's a shame as the story itself was good and gripping and, no spoilers, the end made me gasp out loud. But I did zone out a few times when listening.
The narrator did a really good job of different voices for each character and reading with emotion/horror/tense.
For me, the book could of lost a few chapters to make it shorter but I guess you would of lost a lot of character development. But that's just me.

I never leave reviews but....
I've listened to a few of this author's books before and I thought they were pretty good. A little predictable but good. This book however, I loved it. So much that I'm writing my first review ever.
I suppose it's a bit of a slow burn, but it held my interest throughout the entire book. There were a few parts that made me shudder and cringe but not to the point where I had to stop the book.
It's hard to say what I love about this book exactly because I think everything worked really well together. It's suspenseful and the mystery goes up until the last few chapters. I listened to it in two days. Also I'm bad at writing reviews so I hope this helps?
I thought the narrator was great as well. I thought she did a nice job giving each character a distinct voice.

Slow and bad science
It took forever for things to get going and I found two of the main characters we are suppose to identify with extremely unpleasant.
Minor spoiler here for science
At one point a character gets a really deep gash in their neck and an artery has been hit. They are deep in the woods and about to bleed out but a highschooler manages to use the emergency med kit to get into the wound and clamp the artery closed. And it works. Putting aside the extreme unlikelihood of a kid knowing how to do this and the kit happening to have an artery clamp, cutting off the blood flow to one side of the brain like that in reality would cause a stroke. In the book the character is fine like this for days.

It was scary til it was not
After listening to so many books I they seem to all start out great and end up kinda meh. This was one of them. While it kept me interested until the end I wish that authors would stop trying to set up everything to subvert expectations and just tell us the story we want to hear. Without giving any spoilers, all I can say is that the final "answers" neatly wrapped up is the kind of writing that is too easy. Just go with the initial idea and don't be afraid to run with it. Don't feel the need to surprise the reader with a different outcome. Also the characters where all extremely annoying and acted out of character and or unlikeable. Overall it was an entertaining listen, the ending was meh and not believable. I did love the mysterious forest and its ambience and set up.

Slow build is too slow.
I’ve gotten a few books by this author, and while she’s not a bad author she is a very old fashioned horror author. By this I mean she has a lot of build up.. but not a lot of payoff. That’s this books biggest problem. Is a lot of “omg I saw the monster I better run! Now I’m hiding! Oh no it found me! I better run!” over and over and over with no real payoff. I’m little over 3 hours in and I’m still waiting for something to hook me.

Where does this story even take place?
I started listening and the mystery of where the heck the story was supposed to be taking place was more puzzling than the improbable story. Every reference to the setting is either locations that are seemingly completely made up or completely nonspecific (“the country” or “the state”). 15 chapters in and not a mention of where in the world we are. Characters speak as if their from the UK or Australia (referring to their “mobile” rather than cellphone or “holiday” rather than vacation. But the author also has them say things that suggest it’s possibly in the USA or Canada. If a story focuses on a dangerous wilderness, geography matters. It’s the kind of thing that might be forgivable in a B-movie screenplay where the visuals create setting, but in a novel, not specifying where the story takes place is amateurish. It’s something I’d expect from student work, not a published author. Most of the characters are just sketches and the one who isn’t is just flat out unlikable, so the story being written as if the author lacks access to a GLOBE is too distracting.

Couldn't finish it
1. Supposedly takes place in America. Terminology is all wrong. I felt I was reading a story about what a foreigner would think America was like.
2. The characters were shallow. No depth and could not find them to be relatable at all. Their reasoning behind actions were not clear and I was left guessing as to motivations for actions and words spoken.
These were my main problems with the book. I think a rewrite and adding some depth to characters would make a good story, more entertaining. Though I couldn't see past these flaws, the story was interesting.
