Summary

Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case.

Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence’s mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?

As they delve further into their investigation, they encounter a theft where nothing is stolen, a séance with a troubled ghost and an ever-increasing number of Spencer’s family and friends who might just have motive for murder. One thing’s for sure: Lady Hardcastle has a mystery on her hands.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Spirit Is Willing, this edition of In the Market for Murder includes editorial revisions.

Good old fashioned detective story

What made the experience of listening to In the Market for Murder the most enjoyable?

The excellent narration enabled me to imagine the characters well

What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Market for Murder?

I really liked the interaction between Lady Hardcastle and Flo.

What about Elizabeth Knowelden’s performance did you like?

She read with a normal voice! Some narrators seem to have strange way of ending sentences on an uplift like a question. Elizabeth reads as if she is talking to you which is much better.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some bits made me laugh out loud!

Foul language excluded .

A welcome change from the now fashionable foul language detective stories available today , and , nobody felt it necessary to throw up at the least provocation . Narration a bit twee though for my liking .

Excellent

Loved it. Murder and intrigue. Lovely story. The banter and joviality between Lady Hardcastle and Florence Armstrong - her lady's maid - or tiny servant, as Lady Hardcastle affectionately calls her, is fantastic. Witty and good hearted fun. Such a refreshing change to modern day rubbish. Narrated beautifully too. Well done to all.

Another great read in the saga

Really enjoyed this book. Story kept my attention and built on the characters from book 1 where the ladies move to the country.
Some of the characters are not quite believable but our heroines work their way through several different mysteries and , like Miss Marple before them, solve the cases.

Enjoy the narration, but occasionally I feel that a word or two is on the next line and is a bit stilted in flow. I let Elizabeth off though as I generally like her narration and the different characters.

This book will suit those who enjoy following the same characters through a range of different stories - in the vein of Mallory Towers which I read many years ago.

Good yarn

This another good yarn by TE Kinsey about the exploits of Lady Hardcastle and her ladies maid. There are several threads to the tale that are only resolved at the very end. A very enjoyable listening experience spoilt only by the mispronunciation of a few words that are off putting. A pity because I really enjoyed this who dunnit.

Superb cast of characters

Any additional comments?

I'm now hungry for more in this series but, sadly, I see there are none yet published so I'll have to wait. - Which at least gives me something to look forward to.
