Summary

Alice is living the life she always dreamed of: no ties, no constraints and no worries. An intrepid travel writer, her life is one of carefree adventure, full of spa days, dinner parties and self-indulgence.

Virginia finally has everything she ever wanted. The loving husband, the beautiful daughter, and the successful career. Life hasn't always been easy, but she knows now that her family can weather any storm and come through it stronger.

Best friends since university, Alice and Virginia are unlikely allies, but theirs is a bond that runs deep - so much so that Virginia trusts Alice with all she holds dearest. Then tragedy strikes, and Alice finds she must honour a rash promise she made to her friend.

Well worth a listen

What did you like most about Instructions for Bringing Up Scarlett?

The authors introduce us to rounded, normal characters, all set carefully and accurately within different time frames, and show us how they respond to and try to cope with what life throws at them.

What did you like best about this story?

The stories in both past and present developing side by side.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When Virginia and Piers have a row with Piers' parents - anyone with in laws can relate to that!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I listened to much of it on several long car journeys and was keen to return to it each time.

Any additional comments?

I bought this book because I have enjoyed the other books these authors have written. I was a bit wary as I thought it might be a bit sentimental or mawkish, but it wasn't. Difficult issues were handled with sensitivity and realism eg Scarlett's anxieties before starting at secondary school and her desire to fit in. It was easy to relate to the characters and the twists and turns of the plot kept me entranced.

I waited years to read this. Not depressing at all

I've read all Annie Sanders books & love them all. This was the last book they wrote & I was worried it would be depressing but it wasn't. I loved how Alice & Virginia were completely different but still best friends.
I loved the great way both characters had a dated chapter each throughout. I found the secret in the book was easy to find out, so I question whether readers are supposed to work it out or wait to the end when the characters do 🤔
If you love Annie Sanders books then you will like this book. The narrator was brilliant, she performed all the characters very well & I laughed out loud in places. Also you could imagine all the characters & the story as Suzy Aitchison brings them to life
It does make you want to squeeze your loved ones a bit tighter though 😘
