Jutting out into the Sea of Okhotsk, Shiretoko is the southernmost place in the world where drift ice can be seen.

オホーツク海に突き出た知床は、流氷が見られる世界最南端の場所。冬、流氷は植物プランクトンを付着させて知床に到着します。
流氷が溶ける春、光合成によって増えた植物プランクトンが動物プランクトンをおびき寄せます。
動物プランクトンは小型の魚のエサとなり、その魚はクジラやシャチ、海鳥、アザラシなどのエサとなります。
卵を体内に蓄えて川をのぼるサケやマスは、ヒグマや猛禽類のエサとなり、食べ残された死骸は、土に返って森を豊かにします。
海・川・陸にまたがるこうした食物連鎖は、世界でも貴重なもの。さらに知床では、シマフクロウやオオワシなど、絶滅の危機にある動物も暮らします。
