Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture was Japan's first large-scale machine-made silk factory that was built by the Meiji government in 1872 to modernize Japan. 群馬県にある富岡製糸場は、日本の近代化を目指す明治政府が1872年に建てた、日本初の大規模な器械製糸工場です。
当時、最先端の設備を備えた富岡製糸場は、当時の製糸工場としては世界最大規模。
富岡製糸場の建設によって日本の製糸産業は大きく発展し、この工場で作られた良質な生糸は海外に輸出され、日本の経済を支えました。
ただし、絹産業は製糸工場だけでは成り立たず、蚕の卵を採取する蚕種業、蚕を飼育する養蚕業も欠かせません。
その役割を担った田島弥平旧宅、高山社跡、荒船風穴も、ともに世界遺産に登録されています。
絹産業関連の世界遺産は海外には多いですが、養蚕から製糸までを含むものは富岡製糸場と絹産業遺産群だけです。©2017 KODANSHA
