Story
As governor of Galicia, SS Brigadesführer Otto Freiherr von Wächter presided over an authority on whose territory hundreds of thousands of Jews and Poles were killed. By the time the war ended in May 1945, he was indicted for 'mass murder'. He spent three years hiding in the Alps before making his way to Rome and being taken in by the Vatican where he remained for three months. While preparing to travel to Argentina on the 'ratline' he died unexpectedly, in July 1949, a few days after having lunch with an 'old comrade' whom he suspected of having been recruited by the Americans.

But where are you really from? Phil Wang has been asked this question so many times he's lost count. So, finally, he decided to write a book about it. About how to be from two places at once. Phil was born in the UK, in Stoke-on-Trent to an English mother and a Chinese-Malaysian father. Three weeks after his birth, the Wang family returned to his fathers' hometown in Malaysia, and at age 16, Phil was uprooted once again, to return with his family to the UK.

Story
Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

In The War on the West, international best-selling author Douglas Murray asks: if the history of humankind is a history of slavery, conquest, prejudice, genocide and exploitation, why are only Western nations taking the blame for it? It’s become, he explains, perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What’s more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech.

Story
In his brilliantly illuminating new book Sathnam Sanghera demonstrates how so much of what we consider to be modern Britain is actually rooted in our imperial past. In prose that is, at once, both clear-eyed and full of acerbic wit, Sanghera shows how our past is everywhere: from how we live to how we think, from the foundation of the NHS to the nature of our racism, from our distrust of intellectuals in public life to the exceptionalism that imbued the campaign for Brexit and the government's early response to the COVID crisis. And yet empire is a subject weirdly hidden from view.

Free speech is the bedrock of all our liberties, and yet in recent years, it has come to be mistrusted. A new form of social justice activism, which perceives language as potentially violent, has prompted a national debate on where the limitations of acceptable speech should be drawn. Governments throughout Europe have enacted 'hate speech' legislation to curb the dissemination of objectionable ideas, Silicon Valley tech giants are collaborating to ensure that they control the limitations of public discourse, and campaigners in the US are calling for revisions to the First Amendment.

A voice of reason in troubling times
- By Ian on 25-02-21
Summary
How identity politics failed one particular identity.
Jews Don’t Count is an audiobook for people who consider themselves on the right side of history. People fighting the good fight against homophobia, disablism, transphobia and, particularly, racism. People, possibly, like you. It is the comedian and writer David Baddiel’s contention that one type of racism has been left out of this fight.
In his unique combination of close reasoning, polemic, personal experience and jokes, Baddiel argues that those who think of themselves as on the right side of history have often ignored the history of anti-Semitism. He outlines why and how, in a time of intensely heightened awareness of minorities, Jews don’t count as a real minority: and why they should.
Critic reviews
"Patient, clear and persuasive - which makes it not just admirable but valuable." (Jonathan Freedland)
"Just so brilliantly argued and written, I was completely swept along." (Hadley Freeman)
"A convincing and devastating charge sheet." (Dominic Lawson, Sunday Times)

David Baddiel is a very clever soul and creates something so blindingly obvious to me when hearing it and yet, quite clearly it needs to be spelt out. There is no ego here, no self-entitlement, no high horse manner. He’s just stating some facts, some stories in a methodical, plain way. Truly brilliant.

Must read for all UK based 'progressives'
This is a really well researched and clearly written book focusing specifically on the issue of how anti-semitism is dismissed or down played by the 'progressives' in the UK.
As a white, UK-based progressive this highlighted my own past hypocrisies and blind-spots towards anti-semitism and helps me keep an eye out for such failings in future.
I have found it on a par with 'how to be anti-racist' and 'why I'm now longer talking to white people about race' for identifying and addressing my assumptions and privileges.
Because the book is tightly focused it is able to explore a lot of nuance without becoming intimidatingly long or complex.

A compelling but angry polemic
Well, Baddiel airs his cumulative but highly valid grievances to what is predominantly British covert antisemitism, grievances that pour out all over the pages of this short book. His points are well taken and well argued. But they will forever be lost on the English, whose antisemitism is centuries old, virulent, but more insidious these days than when Jews were expelled from Britain or put to the sword.
That antisemitism is now a characteristic of the left is an international phenomenon and a not a surprising one, justified by the left by citing the actions of Israel towards the Palestinians. But the actions of the “Zionists” are merely a cover for the endogenous baked-in British version of antisemitism, now expressible, what Progressivism previously would not countenance.

Excellent explanation of something that's hard to put to words. It seems a shame that the people that might benefit most from it won't ever read it of their own volition. Nailed it.
David Baddiel absolutely nails the way in which anti-Semitism somehow, once again, has managed to claim a completely spurious moral high ground. Ostensibly, the claim of the book is more modest: to sow that anti-Semitism is not viewed in progressive circles as a significant kind of discrimination and is not seen as being linked to any kind of real disadvantage. However page after page reveals that what is really going on here is that anti-Semitism is once again free to wear the mantle of virtue, particularly among the progressive left. This is a powerful and persuasive if terrifying book and I am extremely grateful to the author for writing it. The attention to the subdued cultural character of British Jews as compared with American or even other European Jews is especially enlightening.
