Summary
Cairo, 1887. A beautiful September day. Penrod Ballantyne and his fiancée, Amber Benbrook, stroll hand in hand. The future is theirs for the taking.
But when Penrod's jealous former lover, Lady Agatha, plants doubt about his character, Amber leaves him and travels to the wilds of Abyssinia with her twin sister, Saffron, and her adventurer husband, Ryder Courtney. On a mission to establish a silver mine, they make the dangerous journey to the new capital of Addis Ababa, where they are welcomed by Menelik, the King of Kings.
Back in Cairo, a devastated Penrod seeks oblivion in the city's opium dens. He is rescued by an old friend, who is now in the Italian army, and offered the chance to join the military efforts. Italy has designs on Abyssinia, and there are rumours of a plan to invade....
With storm clouds gathering, and on opposing sides of the invasion, can Penrod and Amber find their way back to one another - against all the odds?

Another great African Story
Another very well researched yarn from the Wilbur Smith Library. Very interesting, beautifully written but rather predicable in the end. I look forward to the next installment.

Excellent!
Unparalleled adventure. Wilbur Smith at the peak of his powers providing insight into the great civilisation of Ethiopia . Instead of the current media portrayal of starving children, you realise what a proud great nation it is . A fascinating spiritual journey for one of teh main characters from evil to good. Evil villains and amazing heroes . However, not a true Wilbur classic as a lot of the book was written by Imogen Robertson

Courtney & Ballantine are pure Wilbur Smith. Elliot Chapman bring them alive in his narrative. Wonderful

Good but...
This book takes place within the book 'Triumph of the sun' and gives more attention to some of the strong female characters. The story is very good, but readers of 'Triumph of the sun' need to suspend their disbelief to squeeze this tale into the original...it doesn't quite fit in my opinion. It also has a slightly diluted feel to it compared to other Wilbur Smith books...not as tense or (strange thing to say) cruel. This may be because we know what happens to all the main characters in the end since they have to slot neatly back into the other story and because the book was co-authored. All in all a good book and well worth the listen, but be prepared for a slightly different experience.

Unexpected Resurrection
It was great to hear about the continued story of the Banbrook sisters, Ryder & Penrod after so long. Great story telling as usual - long may it continue.

As all of his books once listing of reading very hard to put down ,but have to save so to be continued . Very good read and good story hope there is continuation of the story
