Summary

The most decorated homicide detective in NYPD history, Dave Gurney, is trying to adjust to his life of quasi-retirement when a young woman who is producing a documentary on a notorious murder spree seeks his counsel. Soon after, Gurney begins feeling threatened: a razor-sharp hunting arrow lands in his yard, and he narrowly escapes serious injury in a booby-trapped basement. As things grow more bizarre, he finds himself reexamining the case of The Good Shepherd, which 10 years before involved a series of roadside shootings and a rage-against-the-rich manifesto.

The killings ceased, and a consensus opinion developed that no one would dream of challenging - except Dave Gurney. Mocked even by some who'd been his supporters in previous investigations, Dave realizes that the killer is too clever to be found. The only gambit that may work is also the most dangerous - to make himself a target and get the killer to come to him.

Another Brilliant Listen

I'm picking books a new way as I've run out of authors so going with anything read by Jeff Harding - John Vardon doesn't disappoint can't wait to read more. Great characters, well written enthralling plots. So far my strategy is paying off.

Excellent book

I think "Let the Devil Sleep" should come under the heading of an unputdownable book. I tried to stagger my listening over a period of time but it didn't work. Now I am listening to it all over again. Jeff Harding is brilliant in his narration. He has the ability to be able to change his voice to suit his subject with great ease which leaves you in no doubt as to who the character is. I would seriously recommend this audio book, it is a brilliant listen.

Not as enjoyable as the first book

Although I enjoyed the book, it was not as good as the first book. I found the young female very irritating and the connections between everyone a bit rushed. NarratIon ok on this one. Please no more wifey holding pasta or making a salad. I’m going to give the next few a miss for a while. 6/10

Dave Gurney returns!

This is the third outing for Dave Gurney, the retired, highly respected, New York detective.

I'd read/listened to the two previous offerings and couldn’t wait for the third book to become available in the UK.

Fans of Dave will not be disappointed by this latest offering and I urge new listeners to try him too.

It is read by the excellent Jeff Harding (who also narrates Lee Child's Jack Reacher stories)

If you enjoy the books of Lee Child, Robert Crais and John Connelly then this author is for you!

A generally good story

To be honest, we chose this book for the narrator, Jeff Harding, whom we first came across narrating the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. Again, the Connolly books are excellent, but Jeff's performance of the various characters really bought the stories to life. So it was with this book by John Verdon; we had never heard of the author (sorry Mr Verdon!), but as soon as we spotted Jeff Harding's name, we were sold. Very pleased we did select this book, as the author did a good job, and we will now back track to books 1 & 2 in the series. We will also buy book 4, but alas as the narrator changes in book 5, we will not continue; why is it, have established a character's 'voice' in a reader's head, you then change the narrator? As for Jeff, we will follow him anywhere, and so will be combing the books offered for his name!

Master of suspence.

Firstly, Jeff Harding's voice performance in this Verdon police thriller is as immaculate as ever. He imbues every character with its own distinct persona with each distinct voice. The story itself is another excellent modern noir detective novel with a wonderful story that bounds forward at great pace, with a surprising and thrilling ending. The novel contains the usual descriptively great one-liners that bring, at the very least, a broad smile to your face and often a hearty laugh. This novel is particularly welcome in the creation of "Ram TV" which is so irreverently and precisely based upon the foul Fox TV template. The murderous monster of Let The Devil Sleep is presented as no more vile and evil than its media reflection in Ram TV. Verdon is a modern master of the hard-nosed, pulse-pounding cop thriller genre with quite beautiful prose.

Disappointing after books 1 and 2

Unfortunately this didn't have the pace or tension of the previous 2 books. Perhaps I should have given more time between books 2 and 3.

A really great read!

I enjoyed this book very much. Jeff Harding reads extremely well in my opinion and I regularly search for new books based on his performance. This story was engaging with great characters and plenty of suspense. I would definitely recommend it.

A great thriller / crime drama

I really enjoyed this story but sussed the twist early on. This is unlike me so not a reflection on the writing.
immediately downloaded the next book which will be third in this series straight off the bat, needless to say if you enjoy a good crime drama, not too much swearing and a good back story with strong characters, this series is for you.
