Summary

It is 58 BC, and the mighty Tenth Legion, camped in Northern Italy, prepare for the arrival of the most notorious general in Roman history: Julius Caesar. Marcus Falerius Fronto, commander of the Tenth, is a career soldier and longtime companion of Caesar's.

Despite his desire for the simplicity of the military life, he cannot help but be drawn into intrigue and politics as Caesar engineers a motive to invade the lands of Gaul. Fronto is about to discover that politics can be as dangerous as battle, that old enemies can be trusted more than new friends, and that standing close to such a shining figure as Caesar, even the most ethical of men risk being burned.

Superb Story Telling

Firstly let me say that I am an ardent Simon Scarrow fan. I find it difficult to listen to other authors work. That was, until I found this book ! The story and presentation were up to anything I have listened to on Audible before I normally listen at night but I have found myself sneaking quick bursts of story during the daytime as well. Now I have two very talented authors to follow. I recommend this title to anyone wanting to follow the exploits of the Roman Legions. This presentation is only book 1 in the series. I will certainly listen to more

5 star sweep

Loved the narration of the characters, the story was cleverly put together and the battles were written so clearly and illustrate a great picture as you listen/read

Absolutely fascinating!

That is the first book by this author that I have listened to and I was captivated from beginning to end by the historical events and by the variety of interesting characters depicted.

Great book, great performance

Malk Williams gives life and character to SJA Turney's Roman world. You can practically smell the blood and sweat, taste the dreadful wine, and hear the bellowing of the centurions.

Loved it.

Face paced and enthralling. I love historical fiction and having given this book a punt, I can’t wait to read the remainder of the series.

Not Jonathan Keeble is it?

As an avid Scarrow/Kane fan I was looking for new material and came across these books which essentially tick every box for me.

However, who in their right mind chose this narrator? Accents all so similar it’s impossible to determine who’s talking to who is the least of the issues.

Imagine this series in Keebles hands, and it would be astounding. Sorry Malk, that high pitch squeak just doesn’t cut it and ruins what could be a phenomenal series for me personally
