Summary

It is 58 BC, and the mighty Tenth Legion, camped in Northern Italy, prepare for the arrival of the most notorious general in Roman history: Julius Caesar. Marcus Falerius Fronto, commander of the Tenth, is a career soldier and longtime companion of Caesar's.

Despite his desire for the simplicity of the military life, he cannot help but be drawn into intrigue and politics as Caesar engineers a motive to invade the lands of Gaul. Fronto is about to discover that politics can be as dangerous as battle, that old enemies can be trusted more than new friends, and that standing close to such a shining figure as Caesar, even the most ethical of men risk being burned.

At Last!! Something else worth listening to!

If like me you love Simon Scarrow, Bernard Cornwell, Matthew Harffy, Anthony Riches, Robert Fabbri and Ben Kane, buy this, you will not be dissapointed! A thoroughly enjoyable listen and a great take on Julius Caesar and the intrigues of Roman life. So far only up to book 4 is available on Audible, hopefully that will soon change because I have loved all 4 thus far!

Not bad of its kind

I tend to read books like this when there’s nothing else I want to read. That sounds harsh but they do tend to be a bit March-Fight-March-Lose a Minor Character -climactic battle. This fits that general mould but has decent characters not weighed down by traumatic back stories. It’s not brilliantly written (there’s a whole drinking game to be got from the use of the word gutteral) but it’s fine.

bit naff but still fun

picked this as I had read vindolanda by Adrian goldsworthy- which was much better. this is pretty stereotypical stuff, but quite enjoyable despite this.

maybe slightly critical?

I just thought this book was overly detailed and a bit boring. It gives lots of specific details which I felt never really added to anything and I'd switch off a bit due to boredom

Great book, great performance

Malk Williams gives life and character to SJA Turney's Roman world. You can practically smell the blood and sweat, taste the dreadful wine, and hear the bellowing of the centurions.

Not reccomended

overal just a tedious book. the characters fall flat. the scenery falls flat and the narration falls flat. personally irritating to hear all the incorrect stuff. the author explains all these trivial bs roman gimmicks to you to make his story 'authentic' but then turns around and calls the roman republic an empire. which it is most certainly not at this time. stuff like, spain germany and italy did not exist and would be more authentic to explain than to explain what the plural is of a pilum. i regret spending my credit on this and urge you not to buy.

i came here after reading hannibal series. which was absolutely amazing. especially compared to this drabble.

Loving the series so far!

The more I listen to this series (just finished book 4) the more I am enjoying it. It just gets more interesting and better the further in you get. The series is a bit of a slow burner to start with when compared to Simon Scarrow's books but it is well worth sticking with as by the end of book 4 I am hooked! In my opinion they are just as good as Scarrow's books.

The best Roman series I’ve listened to!

This is a well balanced, even stable book. God characters, realistic storyline, good pacing and excellent narration. This book is a pleasure to listen to. No character or two powerful or untouched. Great story and series I will consume.

great novel. Can't wait to listen to next book. I would say it was as good a Colleen McCollaugh's series on ancient Rome

Great First Book!!!!

S.J.A. Turney did an amazing job with this. the story is full and the character development is on point. more importantly he did his research before writing...which makes a huge difference. This is definitely a "page turner"

Also some of the best narration. He has a strong voice, energetic, and is not monotone. I look forward to more books in this series

a bit repititive

to explain the rationale for an attack, and to give the feel of the comaraderie between the soldiers, the author used grins and growls repeatedly.
