Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

What separates the world's most successful entrepreneurs and business tycoons from the rest? It's not their superhuman intelligence. It's something more fundamental: they understand how to turn uncertainty to their advantage.

We all know that the future is inherently unknowable, and yet we behave and plan as though it is. Once we truly understand the nature of uncertainty, though, we can take practical steps to make the most of the opportunities that come our way. In Mastering Uncertainty, award-winning author Matt Watkinson and investor and entrepreneur Csaba Konkoly offer a masterclass on the workings of luck and probability. They show how to calculate when to make big bets and when to pull back. And they offer supremely practical advice on how we can improve our odds, whether through maximising our networks, learning how to read warning signs or assessing where best to place our energies.

The unforeseen always occurs. Mastering Uncertainty shows you how to prepare for it and make the best use of it.

Gets straight to it - real practical advice.

Really enjoyed this am on my 2nd time through as there are so many nuggets it's hard to catch them all on first listen without extensive note taking (although the structure helps as the main points are given as a brief synopsis at the end of each chapter).

I found it reminded me of a few things, confirmed my thinking on some others and taught me a lot of new stuff too.

Well worth a listen (this was actually my first nonfiction audible, so I ended up getting a paper copy too to markup for my own reference)

A book that's certain to provide value

I found Mastering Uncertainty a great assimilation of principles I'd previously read about and new ideas I was unaware of.

Reading a lot of non-fiction, I take in huge swathes of theories and principles, but in all honesty, forget the vast majority. Mastering Uncertainty is a fantastic reference for several fundamental concepts I know I'll return to regularly.

To back this up, I've also bought a hard copy that will be my quick reference guide once I've run riot with my highlighter.

It was also interesting for me to think of uncertainty from a spiritual perspective. In my pursuit to minimise my desire to control the external world and focus on the journey/present moment, I think it still makes sense to implement habits and practices that are within my control and will increase my 'luck surface area' (a principle Matt/Csaba discuss in the book).

Having gained exceptional value from Matt's previous two books (The Ten Principles Behind Great Customer Experiences and The Grid), I'm sure Mastering Uncertainty will be a worthy addition to any business leader's library and cement his position even further as a thoughtful, challenging and above all, practical voice in this space.
