About this listen
He's empty, inhuman, dishonest, and cruel. She's never wanted anyone more. Sydney has lived in fear for eight years after freelance assassin, Merc, failed to rescue her from a cult-like militia group. Left in the hands of a sadistic man, she did whatever it took to survive. But Merc's last words gave her hope. Hope he'd be back to finish the job. After Merc is betrayed by her father, Sydney becomes his target. He wields sex, drugs, lies, and love like weapons. Merc knows just what to do with a fearful girl like Sydney. He's in control. He's always in control. But Sydney Channing is not what she appears. And Merc's only redeeming act - the very one that made Sydney's life a living hell - might just be his worst mistake yet. Warning: Meet Me in the Dark is a standalone non-traditional dark captive romantic suspense. It is not intended for sensitive listeners.

He's not morally grey, he's morally black!
H0ly M0ly! This is a seriously twisted mind-control storyline, and I loved every freaking minute of it. To say that the MMC is a nightmare is an understatement. I had no idea how Julie was gonna make Sydney actually fall in love with him. He wasn’t morally grey he was morally black! BUT underneath it all we see snippets of his love for a girl he rescued years ago and how she’s now like a little sister to him. Sasha features in The Company, so this is a series crossover book and you are back in the twisted world of Company Kids. It’s a head trip at times.
This plot will twist and turn your head off. It’s complex and fast-paced with so many wait…what moments and side-swiping plot twists you better hold on because this one is a ride.
Anna brings an innocence to Sydney so in keeping with her character. She also is great at making sure we know what is present-day and what is a flashback. Troy has a no-nonsense approach to Merc. He is unapologetic, calculating, manipulative, and at times just plain old mean. Troy is so good at playing questionable characters. This audio is fantastic.
If you are looking for a thriller with some spice and love, this is the book for you. The heat is bruta! at times but perfect for these two. And although it takes them, literally the length of the book to come to the realisation that they are, in fact, in love, their love story is the perfect pace for them.

Brilliant book but.....
I really struggled to warm to the H. It was a difficult listen for a good portion of the book and
Spoiler
For the first time ever, I was really hoping that the h walked away as she deserved far far better than Merc.
I would still highly recommend the book though, it was brilliant, just prepare yourself for a H with no enduring qualities (that I could see).

Very dark
I loved this book. Not your typical "dark, captive romance" where a complete asshole falls for a pretty, but entirely normal, girl who is bizarrely ok with overlooking his darkness.
These two are both dark to begin with but get 'lighter' through the book as you come to understand more of their backstories. They are twisted people, but they're believable characters from a twisted world.
The start of the book is very dark - when you're seeing from the incomplete perspective of a very confused captive. But it's so worth pushing through that uncomfortableness to dig into the plot, especially if you've read the earlier Rook & Ronin books and can spot the connections.

Brilliant!
Eight years ago, Merc left Sydney at the mercy of a maniac. Now he's back to seek his revenge and Sydney is his target. Merc is cold and cruel and he wants answers. But can Sydney give him the answers he needs before time runs out?
Merc: Meet Me In The Dark (Rook & Ronin #7) by J A Huss is not your usual romance, it's raw and gritty and oh so dark. It's a definite must read! Oh, and the narrators are fantastic!
