Summary

Born in Ramsgate during the 1940s, Brenda Bottle was the youngest of nine in a poor but close family. She left school to work as a secretary for British Rail, where she met her husband. But by the age of 27, the marriage was over. Brenda left her job and with the little she had saved, enrolled at Guildford Drama School. And so her life as an actress began.

One of Britain's best-loved actresses, Brenda Blethyn has dazzled in a vast number of roles, including her performances as downtrodden Cynthia in Mike Leigh's Secrets And Lies and as the man-eating Mari Hoff in Little Voice, for which she received Oscar nominations. On stage, television and film she has worked with our greatest writers and directors -- Alan Bennett, Tom Stoppard, Sam Mendes, Peter Hall -- and actors -- including Michael Caine, Jude Law, Julie Walters, Brad Pitt, Ewan McGregor and John Hurt.

Brenda is one of Britain's finest character actresses, famous for playing her roles with social realism and warmth, wit and humour - characters her audience empathise with. She has the same warmth and humour off screen too; a wonderfully down-to-earth person with a fascinating history.

Told with sparkling wit and engaging honesty, Mixed Fancies is the compelling story of her journey from the Plains of Waterloo to the National Theatre and on to television, Hollywood and stardom.

A joyous read!

Like all Brenda does, the book was a fabulous and down to earth. Read with honesty and humour intertwined. I'd always thought of Brenda as a brilliant actress, but since reading her book, I see why she is so connected to her audience. I would certainly recommend this book!

Really good by an amazing actress. An understanding of the poverty and joys of growing up in a large family.

Truly Heartwarming

I loved listening to Brenda telling her story in such a relaxed, uninhibited 'warts and all' style. It reminded me of some of the stories my mother used to tell me about her childhood, especially her fondness for visiting extended family in rural Victoria (Australia)... I fell in love with BB when she was in Pride and Prejudice, if not before, and have adored her more recently as Vera, but nothing beats her real life story. The values, humour and decency in which she was raised find a place deep down that I cherish, and so wish more children were raised in this manner today... ie to appreciate the value of the little things and treat everyone with due respect. Thank you, Brenda, for sharing your very beautiful story.

Amazingly honest and totally absorbing.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mixed Fancies to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version but I would say that it has to be. To hear Brenda Blethyn's words, said exactly as she intended them to be, with the emotion of the moment evident in her voice, is something that one couldn't come near to experiencing whilst reading the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

As it was an autobiography this seems a redundant question. My favourite character was obviously Brenda. Though having said that, her father was quite a character too!

What does Brenda Blethyn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Hearing her read her own words brought so much more meaning to them. Hearing her chuckle when recalling a funny incident or her voice break as she describes the loss of her parents makes it real, makes it less of a 'life story' and far more a 'life lived'. That wouldn't come across were someone else to narrate the book.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I both laughed and cried whilst listening to this book.

Any additional comments?

Brenda Blethyn is a natural story teller, she's open, honest and funny. Listening to this I learnt that she's got a natural talent for accents, that she's extremely self depreciating, very family focused and that we have something in common (a love of puzzles). This book pulled back the curtain on a much loved actress and revealed a wonderfully warm and truly lovely person.
