We're all nice. In fact, we're told we're too nice and we have to change to succeed: 'play the game!'; 'beat them down!'; 'toughen up!'. We're in the middle of an epidemic of stress and anxiety. Average life expectancy in the US is down. At work, less than sixteen percent of us are fully engaged. In many high-stress jobs such as distribution centers, emergency room nursing, and teaching, incidences of PTSD are higher than veterans returning from war zones. We are getting something terribly wrong. Our workplaces fail utterly to provide for or capitalize on one of our most basic human needs: our need for love.

Bittersweetness recognises that light and dark, birth and death—bitter and sweet—are forever paired. As Bittersweet shows, our obsession with happiness is not making us happy, healthy or whole. It's only by embracing our darker emotions—as well as the light—that we discover our deepest meaning and connection, love and joy. It can change the way we work, the way we create and the way we love—for it is the hidden source of our love stories, moonshots and masterpieces.

It’s become, he explains, perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What’s more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech.

Our lives exist on a continuum between two poles: fulfilment and regret. We invest enormous resources of time and energy into staying healthy, being recognised for our achievements, nurturing our relationships and making money. When we make the right investments, we earn our lives: our choices, risks and efforts lead us a rewarding outcome that we regard as fair and just, regardless of external validation. But how can we know if we're investing in the right things? Pioneering leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith shows us how to live our own lives—not someone else's version of them.

Knowing how to transform conflict is critical in both our personal and professional lives. Yet, by and large, we are terrible at it. The reason, says longtime mediator Chad Ford, is fear. When conflict comes, our instincts are to run or fight. To transform conflict, Ford says we need to turn toward the people we are in conflict with, put down our physical and emotional weapons, and really love them with the kind of love that leads us to treat others as fellow human beings, not as objects in our way.

In middle age, many strivers begin to find success coming harder and harder, rewards less satisfying and family relationships withering. In response, they do what strivers always do: they double down on work in an attempt to outrun decline and weakness, and deny the changes that are becoming more and more obvious. The result is often anger, fear and disappointment at a time in life that they imagined would be full of joy, fulfilment and pride. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Summary
From the author of the Wall Street Journal best seller Barking Up the Wrong Tree comes a cure-all for our increasing emotional distance and loneliness—a smart, surprising, and thoroughly entertaining guide to help build better friendships, reignite love, and get closer to others, whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, socially adept or socially anxious.
Can you judge a book by its cover?
Is a friend in need truly a friend indeed?
Does love conquer all?
Is no man an island?
In Plays Well with Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a 20-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.
Leveraging the best evidence available—free of platitudes or magical thinking—Barker analyzes multiple sides of an issue before rendering his verdict. What he’s uncovered is surprising, counterintuitive, and timely—and will change the way you interact in the world and with those around you just when you need it most.

"Challenging!"
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s previous bestseller, ‘Barking Up the Wrong Tree’. So, as a lifelong student of “people”, “relationships” and “what makes us tick”, I was so impatient to read Eric Barker’s new book.
I have to confess that, although I found this (audio) book thoroughly entertaining, humorous and backed by the meaningful level of research that I personally always need to enjoy a book, I also found it challenging. It provoked me to re-examine my understanding of ‘relationships’, ‘friendships’, ‘love’, ‘loneliness’, ‘communications’ … and all aspects of our interactions with others.
Well done, Eric Barker! You have ‘stopped me in my tracks’ and reminded me, as a business psychologist, that when I try to help others to lead & manage people and to deal with ‘relationships’, I still have an incredible amount to learn about myself and our relationships. Thank you!

a fun book to read
It's fun to listen to this book. From time to time, it made me laugh even thought it's a book with serious content/topics.
The story about a soldier lifted and hugged the little German boy made me moved. It makes me think how we can draw the best from everybody and make the world a better place to live.
Several chapters were talking about marriage, it is interesting! You will sure feel better after listen to these chapters. Hahaha.
