Summary

A simple yet profound guide to establishing a transformative and sustaining Zen meditation practice.

Zen master Julian Daizan Skinner guides the listener through a sequence of meditation techniques that can safely lead even a complete novice through to advanced levels. Based on his own long experience of the Rinzai Zen tradition, as taught by the great 17th-century masters Hakuin and Bankei, Daizan highlights the key points for success and addresses the pitfalls. Structured around a traditional teaching framework called 'the two wings of a bird', Daizan clearly lays-out how these methods build and combine to create a transformative and sustaining practice.

The work of a master, the audiobook speaks at a deep level, with utmost simplicity.

Accessible yet Ambitious Guide

The paperback has served me well, but to revisit through the audiobook has been joyful. Beautifully read by the author, the listener is guided throughout. Highly recommend.

A book to be cherished

There’s not a day go by where I don’t revert back to the knowledge that is contained within this insightful book. Thought provoking with historical Zen teachings and practices. Each listen provides a sense of togetherness within a community where I belong yet alas from afar.

Amazing - simple but profound impact.

This is the best introduction to meditation I’ve had, and I finally understand what Zen means.

I’ve started a habit as a result of listening, and it’s been transformative.

The text provides an introduction and encourages two simple practices - 20mins a day, and meditation diary. The latter was more impactful than I thought. I’ve tried apps that say any length of time is fine, but I’ve come to realise that 20mins is the minimum if you want to do this properly.

The book also includes 8 full guided meditations, which are great and all you need.

Can’t rate highly enough.
