Summary

Dark secrets and forbidden love threaten the very survival of the Shadowhunters in Cassandra Clare’s Queen of Air and Darkness, the final novel in the number one New York Times and USA Today best-selling The Dark Artifices trilogy. Queen of Air and Darkness is a Shadowhunters novel.

What if damnation is the price of true love?

Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livia Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to Los Angeles, seeking to discover the source of the disease that is destroying the race of warlocks. Meanwhile, Julian and Emma take desperate measures to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. What they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never have imagined. Caught in a race against time, Emma and Julian must save the world of Shadowhunters before the deadly power of the parabatai curse destroys them and everyone they love.

Excruciatingly long winded.

Not quite sure how it has been given such raving reviews. Title says it all really. Incredibly boring.

Garnage

What a load of crap, compared to the two previous installments this third book was a massive let down and crap, the reader made it unbearable to listen to. Cassandra Clare have ruined this last book, could have been amazing but such a let down.

An exception to a usually great series

I've listened to or read every single Shadowhunter novel and series going and loved them, but I felt that this book just wasn't up to the usual standard.
It felt Incredibly slow in parts, and I found myself stopping to listen to something else and coming back to it, rather than rattling through with excitement to the end. Parts that should have been exciting just weren't, and there was so much overly flowery emotional prose it became cheesey. What I found most irritating though was the the various relationships started to override the actual plot, and it honestly felt like the author, having run out of the 'ordinary' selection of non-traditional relationships, felt like she had to shoehorn in something even more out there, which ended up with the polyamorous relationship of three of the characters. So suddenly the Shadowhunter world, which in the first books couldn't even cope with a same sex relationship, was suddenly a place a three way love affair didn't really shock anyone. The book felt the author was making a point about how woke she is, and like one big lecture from the author that all kinds of people and relationships are totally ok - but we as readers know this, and wouldn't have got so far into the successive series if we were in any way offended but the melting pot of genders, sexualities and lifestyles she depicts. With the three characters there wasn't even any of the tension we felt during Magnus and Alex's journey and the happiness we felt when it all worked out for them. What we readers didn't quite get this time is the amazing story and emotional roller-coaster that we've come to expect love from these books.
I'll absolutely still listen to any next book in the Shadowhunter world but really hope it'll be back to the usual amazing standard.

A great plot ruined by the narration

Can't fault CC on her writing but the narrator changes volume too much, making it hard to listen. I felt like I was constantly turn the volume up and down.

Brilliantly read

Poor James Marsters having to read 30 hours of this with so many different points of view and accents. He manages brilliantly. The book itself is incredibly long with an unsatisfactory conclusion and loads of setup for the next trilogy. Plus a polyamorous relationship between a teenage girl and two older men which seems inappropriate for a book aimed at teenagers.

Wonderful Ending

Heartbreaking and hopeful. It's a magical and very flawed World but the depth of the characters both new and old continue to make this book one hell of an ending. The whole trilogy has handled such complex issues including sexuality, gender, bigotry, racism and autism with an empathetic understanding of life's diversity that it's just shows how much Clare's writing continues to grow and flourish. I very much look forward to seeing what happens next in the World of Shadowhunters and Downworlders.
James Marsters narration as always is a delight to listen to.

She delivered

Clare 100% delivered. I laughed, I cried and I still wanted more after 30 hours of audio book. I’m looking forward to whatever the next book will be.
I’m glad they’ve kept the same narrator for more than one book (a rarity!) and Marsters’ voice really brings it, I think his range is great.
All round excellent and I think it’s as good a last book in a trilogy that I could have asked for.

Best one out of the series

compared to the other two book I defently think this is the better one. I loved the battle and how the story was taken as a whole however the way they deal with the problem between Emma and Julian, I feel, it was just brushed away and they didnt actually solve it. but overall I did enjoy it alot.

Such a pleasure to be back with the shadowhunters

These books are so good, you get taken back into shadowhunter worlds, previous favourite characters return.
You laugh you cry, its awesome. The narrator of the last two books was absolutely brilliant, I wasn't keen on the narrator of the first one of the three, it was a little wooden. This narrator was brilliant, bringing all the characters to life. it really is an experience. If you loved the mortal instruments then this is just perfect for you. Highly recommended.
