Summary

In his quest to define ‘sporting greatness’, double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee has spent nearly four years interviewing and training with some of the greatest minds in sport to discover what it takes to become—and remain—a champion.

Featuring:

Ian Botham • Mark Cavendish • Alastair Cook • Alex Danson • Richard Dunwoody • Donna Fraser • Chris Froome • Anna Hemmings • Denis Irwin • Michael Johnson • Kílian Jornet • Stuart Lancaster • AP McCoy • Ronnie O’Sullivan • Michael Owen • Adam Peaty • Ian Poulter • Paula Radcliffe • Ian Thorpe • Mark Webber • Shane Williams

From the age of 11, Alistair Brownlee has been obsessed with being the very best, and not just improving his sporting performance across his three specialist triathlon disciplines of swimming, cycling and running, but also understanding how a winner becomes a dominant champion. Winning gold in consecutive Olympic Games has only strengthened this need and desire.

Over the last four years, Alistair has been on a journey to learn from the best, talking to elite figures across multiple sports as well as leading thinkers and scientists, to understand what enabled these remarkable individuals to rise to the very top and to push the limits of human capability in their relentless pursuit of perfection.

Alistair uses these fascinating interviews, along with extensive research, to explore a range of sports and environments—athletics, cycling, football, rugby, horseracing, hockey, cricket, golf, motor racing, snooker, swimming and ultra-running—to reveal how talent alone is never enough and how hard work, pain, pressure, stress, risk, focus, sacrifice, innovation, reinvention, passion, ruthlessness, luck, failure and even a lockdown can all play a crucial part in honing a winning mentality and achieving sustained success.

excellent book

As he shares early on in the book, this isn't his story. More of a lost of stories from some of the worlds most iconic sports personalities. There are some epic personalities as well. Giving us more humans an outlook on what it took them to reach the levels of greatness. A real cracking listen

Read this if you love sport!

Absolutely highly recommend if you love winners in sport.

Intelligent, entertaining, thoughtful, insightful and fascinating. Takes a look into the world of sporting elites, their winning mindset, attitude and struggles.
Really descriptive interviews. Feels like you’re sat next to them while Ali is interviewing them.

What strikes me is how down to earth the sportsmen really are.

Highly Recommend!

Great Insight; applicable lessons for Amateurs

Very enjoyable and well researched book.

Many fabulous examples detailing the best current and historical thinking into what it takes to be a successful sports person, have a winning career and deal with the inevitable highs and lows.

Initially I was disappointed it wasn’t more biographical, but I now agree with Alastair that to list his own personal story would only offer a limited and narrow perspective.

Great book, interesting and motivational. Would be greatly improved by a professional narrator though.

So far, so fantastic…

I have to confess that, as a confirmed fiction-fan, I was unsure about using a credit on this - it couldn’t be further from my standard audible fare and, fan as I am of the Brownlee Brothers, I wasn’t convinced by the subject matter (I feared a Sport Science undergraduate dissertation, wrapped in a household name, to be honest), but it’s actually great. I’m about half way through and it’s entertaining (Brownlee is, crucially, an engaging narrator) and relatable - even a plodding runner like me can draw inspiration from it. The exposition of sporting greats is very well done, with anecdotes and observations aplenty to keep up the interest. The material is sprinkled with enough personal reflections and reminiscences to satisfy Brownlee Brothers fans and followers. Much as it’s about sport, the common factors and approaches which make for success could be applied to any field or walk of life, which is, in itself, fascinating.
