About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of 'Rommel?' 'Gunner Who?', written and read by Spike Milligan.

'Keep talking, Milligan. I think I can get you out on mental grounds.'
'That's how I got in, sir.'
'Didn't we all?'

The second volume of Spike Milligan's legendary recollections of life as a gunner in World War Two sees our hero into battle in North Africa - eventually.

First, there is important preparation to be done: extensive periods of loitering ('we had been standing by vehicles for an hour, and nothing had happened, but it happened frequently'); psychological toughening ('if a man dies when you hang him, keep hanging him until he gets used to it'); and living dangerously ('no underwear!'). At last the battle for Tunis is upon them....

Some things never change

L/Bdr. Milligan S. has made a funny program. I laughed out loud and got a bollocking. As it was his fault I shall be complaining to his headstone. Failing to get a reply I will be making a direct appeal to his widow. Stop making me laugh inappropriately.

Laughter through adversity

Comical from start to finish. At the same time underlying hints of the stress of war in N Africa.

Read as it's written.

Spike was mad, and the book is written like that fluctuating unexpectedly from mapcap to poignant in an instant. I guess that's war for you. Capitivating.

Outstanding story

Laughed, wept, moved, entertained, enlightened. Milligan's memoir is a joy to listen, his voices are superb.

A favourite for years

I initially bought these years ago. Fell in love with the personal stories and experiences of spike during his ww2 campaign. He intertwines his comedy with the down to earth day to day grind involved in being a soldier. Highly recommended but start from volume 1.

Colin’s review

Brilliantly read by Spike Milligan made it come to life with his experiences and how humour and friendship got him through the war.

Just brilliant

Listened to it in the car on the way to and from work.

Found myself driving slowly and choosing the longer route to be able to enjoy more of the book every drive.

Spike at his best

If you like Spike Milligan you'll love this series of his war diaries.
He talks with humour of the things that they got up to and the hopes and fears they had

Spikes Memorial to the British Squaddie.

Moving on from 'Adolph Hitler....' Spike continues his Wonderful account of the British at War.All the ridiculous 'Rules and Regulations' the Overt and Covert 'Class Warfare' between Officers and Enlisted. The Tragedy and loss along with the Terror and Boredom of War, nothing is missed but throughout is Spike's Affection and Compassion for the 'Ordinary Bloke' and the nobility inherent in Friendship,Loyalty and the kind of Personal courage it takes just to find a reason to go on. As with all of Spikes Works a 'Love Letter to Life and People that never fails to laugh at the 'Raspberries' along life's path !
