Summary

Named one of the Top 40 Horror Books of All Time by the Horror Writers Association, Theodore Sturgeon’s dark and foreboding look at the vampire myth was an instant classic when it was originally published.

Army psychiatrist Philip Outerbridge receives a confidential folder containing the letters, memos, and transcripts for a young soldier named George Smith - a quiet young man with a terrible past and a shocking secret. As Outerbridge conducts George’s therapy, he gradually discovers the truth about George’s traumatic childhood, his twisted romance with an older woman named Anna, and the unusual obsession George keeps hidden from the world.

With the masterful touch that earned him the Hugo and Nebula awards, Theodore Sturgeon creates a character of both unsettling violence and irresistible humanity, eliciting both horror and sympathy.

Not sure I get the point of this at all!

Don’t waste your valuable time on this one. The booj meandered from start to finish and I fail to see what the point of the tale was. It was categorised as a horror/thriller. I can tell you it was neither. The book was more of a sad recount by phsyciactric professionals
of a mixed up kid who grew up in a house with a drunken violent father and developed a taste for blood in to adulthood. That’s it!

Some of your Blood

"It is, it really is fiction", such reassuring words to draw the listener in from narrator Malcolm Hillgartner reading Theodore Sturgeon's book.

We hear the story of George Smith. We are given through various first person accounts how George isn't like other people, somehow strange with some issues surrounding him.

But what?

Sadly, there's a reluctance to reveal. I understand that the author is well renowned for psychological thrillers and horrors. This didn't impress me. The book doesn't get going until the latter half, but even here explanations and revelations are stretched.

Yet the Audible narrator, Malcolm Hillgartner, kept my attention. It is due to his narration that I stayed with the story. 4/10 but mainly for the narration.

Scoring: 0 bad; 1-3 poor; 4-6 average; 7-9 good; 10 excellent

Interesting and very different

I very much enjoyed the performance and it accompanied the story extremely well in tone and delivery. Reminded me of the excellent ‘his bloody project’ in many ways, though if honest the ending of this one left me needing a bit more to close it off.

Outstanding

I'm amazed I haven't come across this novel before as I understand it routinely appears in lists of the greatest horror novels of all time. The format of the book is wholly original and the content truly grisly.

over rated?

Very disappointed. I read the summary and thought I was in for a treat! Wrong. Boring and dull.

Interesting

I can't call this a horror story in the true sense, nor vampire story. this could have been a plot to a Law & Order: Criminal Intent as it seems to be more involved in solving than scaring.

Not what you're expecting

Throw a different title or even cover art on it and you'd be fine. This is not a vampire book, or really even horror. It's more of a psychological deep-dive into the mind of a twisted, emotionally stunted hemophage. Not a bad listen/read, almost the written version of a found footage film, just don't hold your breath for a big supernatural reveal.

Excellent non-scifi Sturgeon

I read this long ago and thought it was excellent and still think so. Its a Silence of the Lambs kind of thing, though not a serial killer story. Very much a psychological investigation with some disturbing revelations. But do not think it will be a SF novel.

Incredible

This was an amazing and fast read. There were several areas I replayed just because the terminology was unfamiliar. If you’re the sort of person who wants to know WHY someone or something is then this is a choice for you.

Disturbing and fantastic.

I went looking for a literal vampire book and this came up. While the search engine was incorrect, the story was great.
I strongly suggest this to anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery and psychology.

Before "Science Of The Lambs" there was this.

This masterwork by Theodore Sturgeon is incredible. a hidden gem expertly written and narrated. the language and the format works well. The story creeps up on you slowly. It reads with a sense of voyeurism that allows us to get into the head of a disturbed individual as his psychiatrist discovers who this person really is. if you like horror and thrillers, I highly recommend "Some of Your Blood".

THE FATHER

With the exception of the very beginning and the very end, this story is told through letters and telegrams. It is exceptionally well written, intelligently done, and gets creepier as it goes along. I would not say it is exceptionally scary, yet it is troubling. It is a mystery. You might find yourself having empathy for a killer. I promise you will not be bored.

Narrator does an excellent job.

I Thought I Knew Theodore Sturgeon

I have read other Theodore Sturgeon books and I thought I knew what to expect.. But as usual for him you can't ever know what to expect. The narrator was unbelievably good! I would definitely listen to anything that he read again!

just listen!

I went in knowing nothing of the author or the story. I didn't even read the reviews, which I normally do. I am so satisfied with the level of creep and cringe. Not the normal, run of the mill, monster story. He'll, it even had a happy ending, kinda...
