Summary
Winner of the 2013 Audible Sounds of Crime Award
Its 25 years since John Rebus appeared on the scene, and 5 years since he retired. But 2012 sees his return in Standing in Another Man’s Grave. Not only is Rebus as stubborn and anarchic as ever, but he finds himself in trouble with Rankin's latest creation, Malcolm Fox of Edinburgh's internal affairs unit. Added to which, Rebus may be about to derail the career of his ex-colleague Siobhan Clarke, while himself being permanently derailed by mob boss and old adversary Big Ger Cafferty. But all Rebus wants to do is discover the truth about a series of seemingly unconnected disappearances stretching back to the millennium.
The problem being, no one else wants to go there - and that includes Rebus's fellow officers. Not that any of that is going to stop Rebus. Not even when his own life and the careers of those around him are on the line.
James MacPherson played DCI Jardine in Taggart for 16 years, and has acted on stage in plays as diverse as The Taming of the Shrew and ART by Yasmina Reza. He has presented a regular books programme for Radio Scotland - for which he has interviewed Ian Rankin. He won a Spoken Word Gold Award for his reading of
Strip Jack, a Crimefest Audible UK Sounds of Crime Award for Doors Open and has narrated all the Ian Rankin Rebus books. James lives in Glasgow.More from the same

Good book spoiled by terrible narrator
Found the narration irritating and distracting. While voicing characters ( ie acting) he was fine, but when reading the narrative, he read like an adolescent trying to impress the teacher, with 'dramatic' pauses in all the wrong places, especially when a a character name was the first word of a sentence. Did no-one listen to this before publishing? Really, Mr Rankin, you ought to respect your listeners as much as your readers and edit your audiobooks - I can't imagine you would have let this one actually be subjected to your public if you had heard it first....

Not the best Rebus book but thoroughly enjoyed it
As a big Rebus fan I was always going to a little bias on this one but I genuinely enjoyed the book. The writing quality is up to Rankin's usual standard with believable characters and a really refreshing diversion from the usual Edinburgh locale. I was a little disappointed with the linking of the Fox character from the two complaints books; I thought he could have made a lot more of that - hopefully that might come in a future work. Whilst I liked the plot I did find the "bad guy" link a bit tenuous and there were a few untied strings from in the end which would have really finished it off nicely. Certainly worth a read but could have been slightly better.

Great to have Rebus back again !
I have enjoyed all the Rebus novels - so it is wonderful to have him back again in this excellent mystery story. James Macpherson is one of my favourite audiobook narrators, so this is an all-round treat.

An enthraling listen whilst travelling
The book held me form start to finish. Ian Rankin is a first rate thriller writer and never fails to please. James Macpherson's reading brought the participants to life and gave he feeling that you were there in the action. I highly recommend this combination of writer and reader.

one point - the place on the Black Isle called Avoch is pronounced 'och'.

Pretty good
I am a great Rebus fan and was of course delighted to see him back, but I must admit I was a little disappointed with this book. I felt that by combining Malcolm Fox and Rebus neither of them was really done justice. Towards the end I even found my interest in the eventual solution flagging somewhat. However, to be fair, Rankin has set the bar very high in the past, and this book was enjoyable, just not quite up to his usual brilliant standard.

Brilliant.
Beautifully presented and narrated, Rankin on top form, was able to travel around Scotland and visit familiar places as the story took you from Edinburgh to Inverness to the Black Isle and all points in between.

What did you like most about Standing in Another Man's Grave?
The interplay of the personalities makes for superb listening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Standing in Another Man's Grave?

Rebus Ive missed you
Really enjoyed the return to Rebus and following the story with his dry wit and humour thrown in. I thought the narration by James Macpherson was excellent. I enjoyed the other usual suspects being there ie Siobhan and Big Ger Cafferty and enjoyed my first meeting with Malcolm Fox. If you enjoy Rebus you will love this and I so hope Ian Rankin will bring him back again in the near future.

Another great Rebus story
I really enjoyed this, the characters come to life and feel like real people you'd want to meet (well maybe not all of them). It makes me want to visit the area too which sounds lovely. I was slightly disappointed with the conclusion. It felt a bit brief after the build up, but I'm the sort of person that likes loose ends all tidied away rather that being left wondering about some of the details. This story also brings in Malcolm Fox (Complaints) face to face with Rebus which really highlighted their differences. A good read/listen and hope there. Will be more Rebus to come.
