Summary

An original novel based upon the explosive new Star Trek TV series on CBS All Access!

It is 2246, 10 years prior to the Battle at the Binary Stars, and an aggressive contagion is ravaging the food supplies of the remote Federation colony Tarsus IV and the 8,000 people who call it home. Distress signals have been sent, but any meaningful assistance is weeks away. Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Lorca and a small team assigned to a Starfleet monitoring outpost are caught up in the escalating crisis, and bear witness as the colony's governor, Adrian Kodos, employs an unimaginable solution in order to prevent mass starvation.

While awaiting transfer to her next assignment, Commander Philippa Georgiou is tasked with leading to Tarsus IV a small, hastily assembled group of first responders. It's hoped this advance party can help stabilize the situation until more aid arrives, but Georgiou and her team discover that they're too late - Governor Kodos has already implemented his heinous strategy for extending the colony's besieged food stores and safeguarding the community's long-term survival.

In the midst of their rescue mission, Georgiou and Lorca must now hunt for the architect of this horrific tragedy and the man whom history will one day brand "Kodos the Executioner"....

Not as captivating as it felt it should be

This book covers the events of the Tarsis 4 incident. Which was a huge tragedy however only covered by two lines of dialogue in TOS.

A good book to flesh out this event however I just felt it missed the mark. It was trying to be dramatic without the drama. Which all happens in the first few chapters and could not peak again.

Still a good book.

Good.

Not as well written as the first novel but not a bad listen, better narrator this time around.

Average story line.

The story is a classic Star Trek style Pulp Fiction. Unfortunately, the storyline does nothing unpredictable. The narrator is good but not amazing. I was hoping for a better story about the past of these two characters. The ending is quite strange however I think it is due to it connecting to a TOS episode. Lorca is painted as an unpredictable psychopath who it is hard to believe could ever get into the star fleet academy.

Not great but not bad.

Cumbersome and a bit clunky, but a good story

I would listen again to this. However, this narrative is overly filled with interesting but distracting and unnecessary back story and excessive descriptions of how people are dressed, where they were from, how they were feeling - rather too much 'telling' than 'showing'. I felt it detracted from the pace of the story, which is well constructed and thought through.
One liner 'dialogue' lines are frequent, which I find irritating and superfluous, more showing technique could be better employed. Also, people 'sigh' rather a lot!

The narrator sometimes makes it difficult to tell the characters' inner voices from the story narrative, but he does have quite a good way of varying the characters and can be quite engaging. Other times I get the feeling he was just reading outloud and sometimes was totally disengaged. Overall, not bad. But I would prefer more energy from a narrator. I like January LaVoy as a narrator, in the Voyager series btw.

just. ....okay

obviously it was well read, it's Robert Petkoff!! But the story was long, drawn out and nothing really happens. 11 hours of dribble and could of been finished within minutes.

I won’t get those 11 hours back!

I liked the context and background to the characters and the basic plot was ok but it really felt like it was a 3 hour book filled up with unnecessary over-descriptions of events to fill the time.
It also felt like it had been written by a vulcan auditor it was so ponderous!
I’m sure some people will love it so take no notice of my review but I would say this, if you are bored after 3 hours, consider moving on to something else, it doesn’t get much more interesting and the Epilogue doesn’t change that in my opinion.
