Summary

The gripping new psychological suspense novel from the best-selling author of breakout hit He Said/She Said.

This novel was previously published as Stone Mothers.

Gripping, terrifying and moving back through time to reveal twists you'll never see coming, We Know You Know delivers shocks and suspense from a master of thriller writing.

'I heard the swish of falling paper. I grazed my knuckles retrieving a beige folder, its grubby white ribbon loose. Looping doctor's handwriting. Addresses. Dates. Names. Photographs! I had found the patients whose notes would bring the past back to life.'

A lifetime ago, a patient escaped Nazareth mental asylum. They covered their tracks carefully. Or so they thought.

Thirty years ago, Marianne Smy committed a crime then fled from her home to leave the past behind. Or so she thought.

Now, Marianne has been forced to return. Nazareth asylum has been converted to luxury flats, but its terrible hold on her is still strong. A successful academic, a loving mother and a loyal wife, she fears her secret being revealed and her world shattering.

She is right to be scared.

gripping, twists and turns

an excellent read from start to finish. Compelling as every chapter revealed a new strand to the twists.

Narrators

A good plot but spoilt by the narrator's phoney, squeaky accents which ranged from Scottish to West Country and back via Essex. Very strange!?

Fantastic listen

Nothing is straight forward in these women's lives. Flawed characters trying to survive choices made. Some unexpected twists and turns keep you guessing until the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Completely original

I was intrigued with the connections between the characters who were well drawn. Amazing narration as well.

A bit disappointing

The story is based around former mental hospital Nazareth, which has now been turned into luxury apartments. The descriptions of the old lunatic asylum are very creepy and it’s a place you wouldn’t ever want to visit, let alone live!

The book starts quite slowly and I almost gave up. It is set in three timelines from different POV, but I was particularly affected by Helen’s story. It is horrific to think how patients were treated in such hospitals even in the 1950s, and even more horrific that they could be incarcerated there for years (or a lifetime) when they weren’t even ill in the first place.

But ultimately I found the book disappointing. The pace was too slow, and there was not enough suspense and it just felt a little flat.

A mixed bag

The author writes well but I found the book overlong, particularly the first section which dragged. The part I thought best was the section about Helen and her story. This was the part I found most compelling.
Some of the description was good as was the characterisation and the reader successfully brought to life the distinct personalities. The book has some interesting things to say about mother/daughter relationships & also about the diagnosis & treatment of mental health problems both now & historically.
Overall though, my feeling is that it was a long slog to get through and should have been edited severely as it would then have been a much better & more satisfying book.

Slow burn

It took a very long time to find characters I liked but eventually I was interested in the story even though most of the characters continued to be extremely self centred some for understandable reasons.

Slow starter, but hang in there 👍

I nearly gave up after a few chapters as I found it very slow. However I persevered and ended up really enjoying this book as it picked up about a third of the way through and was a good read.
