About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Will and Rosie meet as teenagers. They're opposites in every way, but over secret walks home and late-night phone calls they become closer, destined to be one another's great love story.

Until, one day, tragedy strikes and any possibility of them being together shatters.

But that tragedy - and their history - is what will connect them forever...

Critic reviews

Deeply romantic . . . Reminded me of just how all-consuming and transformative first love can be. The more I read, the more I was completely immersed in the story of Rosie and Will and how life, and tragedy, conspire to keep them apart (LAURA BARNETT, author of THE VERSIONS OF US)
The story of Will and Rosie is a classic love story in every sense, and yet, in Claire Daverley's hands, it felt entirely new. The characters are completely alive from the very first page, and how I rooted for them! Talking at Night could be titled Reading at Night, because I was awake through the night, turning these pages (MARY BETH KEANE, author of ASK AGAIN, YES)
Quietly devastating, entirely beautiful, bruising and hopeful. In a world of compromise, Claire Daverley has created a perfect thing. Talking at Night takes its place amongst my all time favourites. I implore you to read it. I'll never forget it (CHRIS WHITAKER, author of WE BEGIN AT THE END)

Loved it

I was going to give this five stars, until I read a review, suggesting the characters perhaps hadn’t developed as they got older, which I thought a valid point.

Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed it. I thought it was beautiful, intelligent and insightful writing, and I really cared about the characters. A well developed story and good narration that more than held my attention and kept me wanting to hear what happened next.

Absolutely beautiful

Such a gorgeous observation on life, relationships, families, loss and the complexities behind them all.
Superbly narrated and wonderfully written, one of my favourites.

Really Good

At first I expected a traditional story formula, boy meets girl soulmate, they face challenges, they get together. However I was pleasantly surprised by the way the story developed and really enjoyed the sincerity and complexity of the messiness which relationships can entail. A great story, thank you.

pretty boring

Was looking forward to the end. Narration was fine but the story was tedious. Over analysing themselves constantly. Just not for me. couldn't stand any of the characters .

Stunning performance

I absolutely loved this audiobook - a rare listening experience of getting absolutely enraptured into the story and having to stop everything just to fully concentrate on what was being said. Such a heartbreaking and visceral performance by Emma Appleton - hugely recommend.

Similar to normal people & conversations with friends

Coming of age story with the typical self indulgence of teenage angst which was understandable but as they got older the characters seemed to have stayed the same, when they might have matured and gained insights… but that part wasn’t well developed.

Superb

Some wonderful writing, so good to be inside the heads of Rosie and Will, and in such a balanced way. Wonderful performance as well

Beautiful written, beautifully narrated

Couldn’t help but feel all the emotions they felt. For anyone that loved the intensity of Normal People you will fall in love with this. The narration was perfection.
