Summary

This is the story of the real bodyguard, Lee Sansum, ex-Royal Military Policeman, martial arts champion and expert in close protection. Part of Mohamed and Dodi al-Fayed's protection team, Lee also had to protect the most famous woman in the world, Princess Diana. He formed a close bond with Diana and the young princes, particularly Harry and it was only by a stroke of luck that he was not in the car the night Diana died. That night proved to be the turning point in his own life.

Over the course of his career, Lee has worked with the rich and famous, such as Hollywood stars Tom and Nicole, Pele and Sylvester Stallone and he gives a candid account of what it's like to work in such a high-pressure job where lives are literally at stake.

Growing up in a tough part of Greater Manchester, Lee learnt the hard way that to survive you need to stand up to bullies and be harder than your opponent. A career in the Royal Military Police took him to the 'Bandit Country' of South Armagh, where he pulled an AWOL squaddie out of a honey trap moments before an IRA active service unit arrived to kill him. He worked undercover in Northern Ireland and join the SIB, the Army's own internal affairs unit, before entering the world of private security, operating in the world's hotspots, such as Libya and the breakaway state of Somaliland.

Lee's story is one of quiet strength, of how reading a situation is invaluable to getting out of trouble. It is one of achieving personal goals and overcoming trauma through the help of his wife, Kate, and through his love of martial arts. It is also a fitting tribute to one of the outstanding figures of our age.

Interesting real boys own adventure story

Enjoyed listening to this working class boy shaped but not defined by his youth, and gone on to do good things in the service of his fellows. There is no greater honour than to serve, help and care for your fellows.

Just the most amazing story

I honestly could not stop listening to this. Lee has had an incredible, fascinating life. This story is informative, moving, and above all so very truthful

Lee can come cross as arrogant at times, but as you listen, it's not arrogance, it's confidence.

a good listen

a really well presented book , how ever I found him a bit arrogant , he was the very best at every thing he attempted , best shot , best runner , best fighter ect.
a whole story of team work whilst almost escaping libiya single handed saving hundreds.
no doubt he's had the most fantastic career and deserves every accolade, but for me , a bit of humility would have been the perfect book

Brilliant listen!

I didn’t know what I was expecting from this book, was it glory seeking? Blame game? Self publicity? Quite frankly it was none of these. Yes, the Princess Diana incident was covered, but certainly not in a way that in anyway sort to criticise those involved or indeed make out that Lee was in someway better than those involved, it was way more subjective.

What I found was a very personal description of Lee’s life and career leading up to and after Diana’s death and how that event had such a profound impact on his life.

The book is so much more than Diana, or indeed Lee’s involvement in close protection. I was blown away with the last two chapters and the room did suddenly become quite dusty!

It’s well worth a read, a friend said such, as he is reading it, but if like me, you like your books read to you, it’s really worth a listen. You’ll also be helping out a brother. So, if you want, give it a try.

I loved it and can’t recommend it enough.

Amazing mindset.

I liked everything to be honest, from the story to the narrator. What an incredible tale, showing the many roles of the bodyguard and the intelligence to read situations-most people think of a muscle bound knuckle dragger when picturing a bodyguard, this man puts paid to that. Life and death situations are daily occurrences and even though I don't know this man I'd be happy to trust my children's lives with him incredible book, highly recommended.

Not what I expected.

I’ll be honest, I thought it would be more about Diana and other protective work. However, several chapters were his sons kick boxing. I’m sure the author is proud of his son - but it seemed it was to fill out the chapters.
