Summary

England, 2020.

There are 1.2 million human-sized rabbits living in the UK.

They can walk, talk and drive cars, the result of an Inexplicable Anthropomorphising Event 55 years ago.

And a family of rabbits is about to move into Much Hemlock, a cosy little village where life revolves around summer fetes, jam-making, gossipy corner stores and the oh-so-important Best Kept Village awards.

No sooner have the rabbits arrived than the villagers decide they must depart. But Mrs Constance Rabbit is made of sterner stuff and her family are behind her. Unusually, so are their neighbours, long-time residents Peter Knox and his daughter Pippa, who soon find that you can be a friend to rabbits or humans, but not both.

With a blossoming romance, acute cultural differences, enforced rehoming to a MegaWarren in Wales and the full power of the ruling United Kingdom Anti Rabbit Party against them, Peter and Pippa are about to question everything they'd ever thought about their friends, their nation and their species.

It'll take a rabbit to teach a human humanity....

Best Book of 2020 IMHO

I am a Thursday Next fan so a new offering from Jasper Fforde was always going to be on my list. I have to confess when it started I didn't think it would really capture me, but the unfolding story of Peter and Constance and the underlying message is just fabulous and at times dark. It didn't take long for me to be completely hooked An insightful journey into prejudices, done with the incredible wordsmithing and obligatory dodgy puns. Everyone should give this a go. Fabulous to find something that made me keen to read/hear more during these strange times. May the Venerable Bunty smile on you all

Another fantastic read

What a clever and enjoyable book.

Mr Fforde tackles ignorance, intolerance, prejudice, diversity and segregation in such an intelligent fun way which is a not an easy thing to do.

He structures this around a great story and the jokes are so subtle and beautiful it makes me want to listen again in case I missed any.

It made me laugh as well as cry and like all great books I didn’t want it to end.

This author really has a talent for holding up a mirror to our society as well as telling a cracking tale with jokes.

What more is required in a novel ?

I look forward to his next one.

More than I thought it would be

I loved this, it's obviously full of Jasper Fforde weirdness that you come to hope for and expect from one of his novels, but I wasn't expecting the discussion on human ways of doing things and actions and I came out of listening to it feeling thoughtful. I think this is the novel that we all need to hear this year!
Narration is good, lots of different accents

5 stars for originality

Really enjoyed this allegorical bunnies tale, a bit of a social commentary and a romping good story.

Fantastic

Jasper Fforde at his best, combining surreal comedy with a great storyline. I think this is my joint favourite Fforde novel, alongside The Big Over Easy. Loved it.

Loved It, worked beautifully as an audiobook

A plot that works on so many levels. Loved the narration, loved the story and loved the twist at the end. Whilst tackling some heavy issues, it was written in such a way that I was chuckling out loud.
