Summary
Six months ago Harry Bosch left the LAPD before they could fire him and then hired maverick defense attorney Mickey Haller to sue the department for forcing him out. Although it wasn't the way he wanted to go, Harry has to admit that being out of the game has its benefits.
Until Mickey asks him to help on one of his cases, and suddenly Harry is back where he belongs, right in the centre of a particularly puzzling murder mystery.
The difference is this time Harry is working for the defense, aiming to prevent the accused, Leland Foster, from being convicted. And not only does the prosecution seem to have a cast-iron case, but having crossed over to 'the dark side', as his former colleagues would put it, Harry is in danger of betraying the very principles he's lived by his whole career.
Read by the star of Bosch, Titus Welliver.

Connolly and Welliver - a brilliant combination.
Titus Welliver's performances in TV's Bosch series perfectly reflects the character in the books and was without flaw. His reading of this book is superb, far superior to any narrators of previous Bosch audiobooks. The storyline is as good as ever, Connolly never fails to come up with the goods. Here's hoping this is the first of many collaborations.

Best narrator I've heard
Really enjoyed this book, but the narrator is what really makes it. He brings the character to life

Joining the dark side is hard to do
Bosch and his brother defence attorney Mickey Haller have joined forces, in what is a first for Bosh. Working for the defence is not something a detective does lightly, the department frowns on this and is considered a form of treason. The adversarial atmosphere invades all logic or understanding of truth or fairness, but Harry wants to find the truth and tells everyone that he will let the chips fall where they may.
A good solid story with lots of procedural, forensics and some court time, the politics and the bickering are kept to a minimum and so is the romancing. This is about investigating, finding and proving a case.
Classic Bosch dry with a twist of lemon and some Wynton Marsalis on the side.
I personally like the reading of this book it has no histrionics and is delivered dispassionately, like you imagine Harry Bosch would do it.

Worth a listen to
This is s decent crime thriller my only criticism is that it was often difficult to distinguish between the characters as the narrators tone remained largely the same no matter who was speaking to who.

Up to the mark
Really enjoyed this Connelly book. Bosch and Haller working together draws out their differences and adds just one more level of conflict. Great performance by Titus Welliver caps a very good plot.

Good, but not the best Bosch/Haller
As usual, Connelly is strong on procedure, and the story grips. I like the interplay between Bosch and Haller. Superb performance by Titus Welliver, who will always be Bosch in my mind now after the excellent Amazon series. Where this falls down for me is on the motivation of the rogue cops. A bit too dastardly. But don't let that stop you....

Enjoyable
Another well written book by Michael Connelly. I like the connection between Bosch and Haller and enjoyed the twists in the story, and how they all came together in the end.
