Summary

Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library

Here is fresh and engaging crime fiction with an appealing heroine – the first in a series of mysteries featuring forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway.

When she’s not digging up bones or other ancient objects, Ruth Galloway lectures at the University of North Norfolk. She lives happily alone in a remote, wild place called Saltmarsh overlooking the North Sea under Norfolk’s vast skies.

When a child’s bones are found in the marshes near an ancient site that Ruth worked on 10 years earlier, she is asked to date them. The bones turn out to be 2,000 years old, and DCI Harry Nelson, who called on Ruth for help, is disappointed. He’d hoped they would be the bones of a child called Lucy who’s been missing for 10 years. He’s been getting letters about her ever since – bizarre notes with references to ritual and sacrifice and quoting the Bible and Shakespeare.

Then a second girl goes missing, and Nelson receives another letter similar to the ones about Lucy. Soon it becomes clear that Ruth is in grave danger from a killer who knows that her expert knowledge is being used to help the police with their enquiries.

Good story, likeable characters

I enjoyed this very much and will look forward to the others in the series. I did predict a few things in the plot- but didn't make it any the less enjoyable.

A little far-fetched for me

An okay story, although a little far-fetched for me. An interesting story line, narrator was good.

A great story, well told

I’m not easy to please where modern fiction is concerned but this ticked many boxes for me. The plot is excellent, without too many implausible devices, the characterisation is very good and there are features such as the historical and archaeological hints that are really engaging. I bought the next one in the series immediately…

A great listen!

This is a good forensic thriller that had me wanting to drive somewhere so I could listen to the next chapter.
Well written and researched as far as I could tell - definitely getting The Janus Stone!

An archaeological favourite.

Sadly I’m late to the Ruth Holloway party but so happy I dropped on it. I love her. I love archaeology & yes time team is one of my favourite programmes lol. But so is digging for Britain with Dr Alice Roberts. The writer of this book has had me from the first paragraph. I think I’ve found me another fab & fast becoming a favourite writer. Totally worth the five stars.

A good listen

I enjoyed listening to this story and am looking forward to Book 2! Narrators voice was easily to listen to and often that can make or break an audiobook for me plus the author gave the listener a few suspects so the culprit wasn’t immediately obvious, which can often be the case.

A forever favourite

I love all of the Ruth Galloway novels and revisit them from time to time - either in print or on Audible. The latter is a wonderful medium for driving and going on long solo walks. Ruth and Nelson are such well drawn characters, that I feel I know them.
